Mepis x86_64 report beta Rc3 6.04
My pc hardware :
CPU
3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 EMT-64
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
MOTHERBOARD
Asus P5P800 SE
VIDEOCARD
ASUS RADEON 9600SE
HARDDRIVES
WDC WD1600JS SATA 2 hard drives
MONITOR
Samsung SyncMaster 763MB
CD
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-108
HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B
INSTALLATION:
Installation went smooth, noticed, only swap, root and home partitions are offered, no option to create
other partitions like /usr /var /temp etc;
One note:
Using 2 hard drives, Grub boot loader, menu.lst original was :
timeout 15
color cyan/blue white/blue
foreground ffffff
background 0639a1
gfxmenu /boot/grub/message
title MEPIS at sda1, newest kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 nomce quiet vga=791
boot
title MEPIS at sda1, older kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz.old root=/dev/sda1 nomce quiet vga=791
boot
title MEPIS at sda1, kernel 2.6.15-27-desktop64-smp
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-27-desktop64-smp root=/dev/sda1 nomce quiet vga=791
boot
title Windows at sdb1
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
title MEMTEST
kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin
I could not mount my Windows sdb1, so needed to map my hardrives, as well the other Linux OS's were not seen. So my corrected menu.lst looks like this.
timeout 15
color cyan/blue white/blue
foreground ffffff

JAVA and FLASH
Konqueror No Problem
Opera Installing to Root, Flash & Java not seen
Firefox Flash & Java not seen
Realize libjavaplugin_oji.so needs link, same for flash, usually seen in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
Synaptic & Kpackage used to maintain distribution, both worked without errors, updates were made.
Configuration
Love the KDE, system is quite responsible, very quick. Not sure about Default Font, seems small and not quite as legible, as i'd like.
Tried installing following software:
Win4LinPro, installation good, does not want to open up..
googleearth_4.0.2091-1plf6.10_amd64.deb error -1 certain dependicies not met
libdvdcss2_1.2.9-1plf6.10_amd64.deb error -1 certain dependicies not met
note: Kpackage corrected libdvdcss2, repository enabled marillat.
One noteworthy experience :
Mounting my ntfs partition
Tried to modify FSTAB, but realized the script was being dynamically generated.
Right Click on Desktop
Create New Link to Device
Hardrive Device
Icons appear on Desktop, and I can mount, read my ntfs partitions.
addendum:
I have a common error, exists with Ubuntu, Kubuntu as well.
Problem: When I log out as user, or re-start computer the screen splash goes horizontal and keyboard and mouse freeze up, then I do a soft boot, note I don't have this issue with Fedora or openSUSE.
Conclusion:
Very promising Mepis 6.04 x86_64 will continue testing for now.
