installing new dsl modem
Posts: 165
Hi,
I'm using Simply mepis 6.0.1, which I installed a month ago. The installation found the internal 56k modem. My ISP is offering a good rate on an upgrade to DSL and they will provide a modem. How hard is this going to be to install without reinstalling the Linux system or losing any data?
I'm in a third world country. The first question that the ISP tech person is going to ask me is whether my Linux system uses Windows 98 or Window XP. I will got NO help from the ISP.
I know there isn't a definitive answer to a question this vague, but any information people can give me will be helpful.

I think most people have luck with their DSL modems. It should probably work.
If it doesn't, you can ask your ISP if they would support a router (my bet is they will). Then you buy yourself a DSL router (make sure it supports the ISP's protocol) and hook that up to the DSL line. That way you have an 'always on' connection and on top of that it will act as a NAT firewall....
