ZONET PCMCIA ZFM5600CF 56K V.92 N Modem

I am trying to use a ZONET external model (PCMCIA) with
Mepis but it does not seem to find the modem.

Under Windows XP, it is recognised as being on COM 5.

The modem is an all hardware type (i.e. not a win-modem).

What device should this modem be found by? (/dev/ttyS4, /dev/ttys5, ?).

It has been 6 days since I

Well, Try Again

Well Bruce, you can try again. Only this time, can you please provide more information? Because a pcmcia card is NOT an external modem.

What version of Mepis are you trying to run? Are you running from the Live CD or has it been installed? Have you tried using any other versions of Linux, and if so, what were your results? Have you used earler versions of Mepis?

Letting us know that the modem works in Windows is only slightly helpful since most modems (internal and external) come with Windows drivers. In the Linux world, most EXTERNAL modems can be recognised automatically.

With more information, perhaps someone can give you information to get you going. Smiling

might work

It may be possible to get this modem working in Mepis

Remove the card when booting the system

After boot, insert the card

Then

type the following commands in a konsole as root

pccardctl insert
pccardctl ident
pccardctl status

Now look at /var/lib/pcmcia/stab, the stab file will tell you the port (for example: ttys0)
enter the port (TTYS0) into your modem dialing program (kppp)
(Not sure this is correct for Mepis, and I have no pcmcia on this desktop)

(check /var/log/messages or dmesg after insert to get the port if that's not the correct file).

It may help to install wvdial

Zonet Modem

Sorry I haven't replied back in a while.

I decided to wait for a newer version of
Mepis to see if the Zonet modem would work
with it.

Turns out that Mepis 6.5 recognizes it
and places it on /dev/ttyS1.

With 6.5 I can have the modem alreay in
the machine at boot up time.

I can now use Mepis for Dial up
internet with my Thinkpad T41.
