usb hub not working at boot but works after mepis has loaded

hi: I have a cheap 4-port USB hub. If it is plugged in when Mepis is booting the PC hangs with a black screen. If I unplug the hub, boot mepis and then insert the hub, everything works fine. Does anybody have a solution for this?
