Dual Screen with ATI Radeon 7500

Hi,
Sorry for my English.
I'm a complete newbie in Linux. SimplyMEPIS 6 is my first use and install of Linux.
I'd like to use a Dual Screen in Twin View : PC Monitor / TV
Can someone tell me if it's possible and how to do this ?
Thanks a lot
Emmanuel

YUP

I too have a r7500
This will only work on S1 out and only one screen.

I do this to my TV set with real player running or DVD with excellent results.
go K > run command > atitvout -f t > in root by selecting options, run with a different user [ root ] and type in your password, and select run or enter.

to return to your screen, CTL + Alt F1, then CTL + Alt F7

Thanks a lot.I did the

Thanks a lot.
I ran the command.
When I do Ctrl + Alt F1, I swith on my TV and there are several lines and at the end
Login : I typed root
Password : ******
A text appears about MEPIS licence....etc
(It's difficult to read on the TV because it's a little bit blur)
And then I don't know what do I have to do.

I'm sorry Sad

this is going to be hard to do...

The Radeon 7500 is one of the R100 based products. It only has one RamDAC. This means that the screen can only support "Clone" and "Stretch."

In "Clone" mode the screens display the same information.

In "Stretch" mode the screens are seen together. If each screen supports 1024*768, you would set your display resolution to be 2048*768.

So, while it technically possible, and while you could use the VGA output for your monitor, and your Svideo for the TV, do keep in mind the display limitations.

Glussier over at Phoronix wrote a sample Config. It's meant for Fedora Core, but it should work on any distribution using X.org with the Radeon driver.

only clone & stretch?

is this limitation hardware or software? I have a 14.1" 1024x768 monitor on my thinpad t40 and a 17" 1280x1024 external that i'm trying to set up ala winxp. BTW radeon 7500 card, mepis 6.5 rc2. please share the wisdom.

I wish !

I cannot get my radeon 7500 to work with ATVOUT using the vesa driver like I could with Mepis 6.0 That worked fine.

With the radeon driver the screen speed slows up and is wabbely.

Let me know if you have any success,

Carl

That is a HARDWARE LIMITATION.

Carl : didn't I already talk with you in Email?

again, I quote from here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/misc/atitvout

Quote:
This utility program may be used for executing several configuration commands for the TV Out connector of ATI Rage Mobility P/M graphics boards under GNU/Linux on i386. Primarily it is intended to enable TV Out support after bootup and for switching the used TV standard from NTSC to PAL.

ATi-TV-Out is ONLY for Rage 128 Graphics cards on a Laptop. Unless you are running a Rage 128 graphics card, ATi-TV-Out does nothing for you.

TV-Out support for the Radeon 7500 is provided by the VESA Drivers ONLY. If you turn on the X.org Radeon Driver, you will lose TV-Out.

you didn't talk to me in an email but

I had asked a question on another thread that I didn't fully understand the answer to. I didn't want to hijack this guys thread I only wanted to understand the clone/stretch thing that had been previously mentioned. My central issue is being able to EXTEND my desktop to another monitor. My hardware is a T40 laptop 1040x768 and a 17in westinghouse 1280x1024. My graphics card is an ATI 7500. I know the setup is physically possible because it works under WinXP Pro. I'd like to do the same thing in MEPIS without getting lost in the difference between "Extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" vs "stretch" or some other term. If I can fix the dual monitor issue then it'll be worth moving onto the next step which is printing then scanning. If you can, please help. I've surfed around and I get that I need to something because ATI doesn't play well.

VESA DRIVER-ATITVOUT

Thanks jsragman

Not sure if I was talking to you, if you had a deferent E Mail User?

Here is my predicament,

I understand the ATI limitations on my old laptop.

However for the last 4 years I have been running the Vesa driver with great success, and ATITVOUT working like a charm.

But now with Mepis 6.5 testings, Vesa runs really sluggish, slow, and what appears to be low FPS. When I move something around the desktop, it looks like it is under water till it stops moving.

Again, the ATI driver works great on 6.5 testing, and I do understand I will never get ATITVOUT working with it.

Question is: can I improve the VESA screen with Mepis 6.5?
and how?

I'll try anything.

Thanks if you can help,

Carl
