Mepis-32 6.04 beta USB doesnt work

I've Just upgraded to Mepis 6.04 but find that my USB doesn't work anymore!!!! It now doesnt recognise my USB Flash Memory sticks that were OK on the previous version and the wifi even thoough it didn't work on the previous version is still is nowhere near working. If Mepis wants to be an OS for the 21st Century then it really needs to sort out the Wireless problems, after all even Windoze works

Try A Newer Beta

scrun, try downloading the newest beta and see if things work. Mepis 6.0-4 is currently at Beta 3.

And if you'd like more help, please provide more information on your setup.

If you need help with wireless, please start a new thread and give SPECIFICS of the type of hardware you have (both your network, and your computer).

"Just works in windows" is a fallacy

and it does not impress linux users one little bit because we know better. I have seen this many times, where a claim is made that something doesn't work when it is in fact working, but due to the version of mepis you are using being a beta ( read - testing only), things are under constant change so one must always use any other alternative method they know of to access something before claiming it doesn't work. If you want things to "just work", wait for the official release and don't bash the beta by comparing it to windows because it is made available for the masses and the only thing requested in return is fair appraisal and bug reporting.

Before I get to your USB, let me give a once and only definitive answer concerning wireless "just working" in windows.

Any time I see or hear somebody say "it just works in windows", every form of alarm bell and warning siren you can imagine goes off in my head and I recognize everything they say after that is based on ignorance, not experience. Let me explain....

I am a computer technician and I know way better than the average user what "just works" in windows and what has to be made to work with third party software and through my extensive experience, I have never seen any wireless hardware "just work" as is errantly claimed in all my years of working with computers.

I challenge any person living to install windows as is from any version of Microsofts install CD on any hardware and get wireless working without third party software to drive their hardware in less than 40 minutes from a blank hard disk, so you see, the windows comparison is faulty from the start.

Back to your usb device, which I am guessing is a thumb drive or an external drive of some type. It may not appear on your desktop, but there is another way you can gain access to mass storage devices through Konqueror.

Open your home folder and press the F9 key to display the sidebar on the left. Click the bottom icon on the left margin for displaying services and look for the listing for Storage Media. If your usb mass storage device is working at all, you will find it.

USB Not showing

Mike,
Thanks for the response, I guess you are correct regarding windoze, I have been using it for too long to notice its "limitations" I've been using Mepis for a few weeks and other than a few gliches (i.e Wireless & USB) Iam finding it a vast improvement on Windoze, anyway back to the problems !!!

my Kingston Usb Flash Disk (2mb) is not showing in Konqueror, in the Storage Media, All I see are the 2 disk partitions

any help would e greatly appreciated.

beta3 has just been unofficially upgraded to beta4

I have not seen any notifications, but my update from 24 hours ago has changed my system label at the login screen to beta4. If you have a hard disk install, try running the update to see if it helps. The devs have been working on correcting usb issues and one long standing issue has been fixed, booting mepis from a usb drive, so I am guessing other usb issues may have been corrected too???

It's also worthy to be noted

It's also worthy to be noted that in 6.0-4 USB devices should appear on Desktop when you plug them in, we don't have a popup windows as before.
