Keyboard and mouse don´t work any longer!!

I booted up MEPIS as usual at the selection screen but then I saw at the beginning two error messages that said: "unabled to activate AUX. unregistrating the port" and "unabled to to activate KBD. unregistrating the port".
The consequense of the messages was when MEPIS reached to the login screen, I couldn´t move the pointer with my mouse and I couldn´t type in letters on my keyboard either. I get the same error messages when I boot up the installation CD.
What went wrong?

Both the keyboard and the mouse have a PS/2 connection. They are connected to the PS/2 port. The strange thing is that every other distributions that I have tried (Ubuntu, SUSE, KNOPPIX etc.) don´t have this type of problem. The keyboard and the mouse are in fact working from the first beginning. As of today when I ran the latest verion of MEPIS the problem still lies there. Once I tried to run MEPIS with other Keyboard and mouse connected into the PS/2 port of my computer and then it worked. It was a Compaq mouse and a Compaq Keyboard, which I don´t own no longer. I have a Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard and a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0.

Time To Swap?

You indicate that you tried a different keyboard and mouse and it worked. Have you tried your current keyboard and mouse on a different computer? If the different computer starts to act flaky, then the culprit is probably the keyboard and/or mouse. You might also try swapping one or the other out at a time, i.e. test keyboard first, then mouse. Sometimes the only way to determine if a problem is hardware or software is to switch things out one-at-a-time.

If your keyboard/mouse work on another computer then they're obviously not defective. Try that first.
If they DO work on another computer then chances are they may be connected in the wrong way. Are you sure each (mouse/KB) is connected to their proper PS2 port?
Try booting with only the keyboard connected. If it works (being able to use the arrow keys and typing login-data) then your mouse is probably defective.
On the off-chance that something happened to your PS2 ports, can you take a look inside to check that everything is still connected there?

My guess is legacy usb is turned off in bios

I see your subject is under the usb drives section, so I am guessing your keyboard and mouse are both usb ???
If I am correct, you'll need to enter your cmos and look for an item called legacy usb or something of that nature, and turn it on.
Because you gave no indication of what type of hardware you have, nobody can give an educated answer to your question.
Just in case they are not usb, never ever unplug and/or plug in a ps/2 keyboard and/or mouse while the computer is running, unless it is a laptop. I have seen too many people kill their ps/2 ports by hot-plugging ps/2 devices and if legacy usb support is disabled at the time, the only option is a replacement motherboard.
