HowTO install HP jetdirect print server
I purchased a low cost ($25), ebay, HP jetdirect (J2591A) parallel port print server and added it to my home network. I have a D-link router (DI-704P) which can also act as a print server, but I thought I would try another concept. So I attached the jetdirect to my router with an cat5 cable and plugged the printer parallel cable into the jetdirect. I then reset the jetdirect to “factory default” by holding down the TEST button on the jetdirect while plugging in the jetdirect and continuing to hold the TEST button for an additional 5 seconds. Next, print a configuration page by pressing and releasing the TEST button on the jetdirect. This will print a configuration page with needed set up information.
Start “KDE Print” (K Menu > Print System > Add Printer).
Select – Network printer (TCP)
next
Fill in - Printer address: 192.168.0.131 (in my case the IP ADDRESS from configuration page)
Fill in – Port: 9100 (this is a common port for HP print servers)
next
Choose your Manufacturer: EPSON (my case a EpsonC86)
Choose your Model: Stylus C86
next
Choose Driver Selection: EPSON Stylus C86 – CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0-rc2 [English]
next
Printer Test: press test button (hopefully you print a test page)
next – (you now just finish the rest of the setup by using the default next buttons)
