Improved WPA support

Up until now MEPIS has had some trouble with WPA and WPA2 support for Intel ipw* chips. After working with Warren this past weekend, Warren has figured out the trouble we were having with WPA support. In the new SimplyMEPIS 6.0-4 Beta series if you upgrade the MEPIS Networking pacakage to the latest version you should have decent WPA support with using KNetworkManager. I am writing this while connected to my WPA2 encrypted network using a ipw3945 chipset.

I believe what he is saying is you need the new mepis-network and set it to automatic via knetworkmanager. Then download knetworkmanager via synaptic. You will be offered wpa connections in that package.

Am I the only one for whom this app does not work?
My laptop is a Dell 700m with a Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card Rev 4.5 using the chipset BCM4306/BCM 2050. The router is a Linksys WRT54G with no encryption.
Knetworkmanager has never worked on this machine, even with the new package downloaded, and knetworkmanager enabled to automatic. When I run the app as root, it indicates "disconnected" on the little icon sitting right between the wireless icon and the wifi-radar, both of which indicate the correct status. And if I then try to connect to my router (which it sees), it hangs at 28% "configuring" and then exits still indicating disconnected--which now it of course actually is.
Puzzled.

Intel 3945 wireless on Toshiba laptop.
WifiRadar works perfectly for me, knetworkmanager just hangs.

Intel Pro 2915abg works, Mepis 6.04 beta is now at #4

knetworkmanager is showing the wpa options now
The latest online updates took my system from beta3 to beta4 and all is working well, even though less than 12 hours ago when I first replied to this post, I had the most recent versions of mepis-network already installed and no updates were available. When I woke this morning (NZ is one of the first on the international date line, gmt +12) there was 15Mb worth of mepis updates which I applied and now my system is showing 6.04 Beta4 on the login splash screen.

KnetworkManager working now

Hello,
I had been using wifi-radar to connect, but when I did the latest upgrades, the alsa one's broke my system, so after mucking around and finally giving up, I reinstalled, and did all the upgrades except alsa ones, and tried out knetworkmanager and viola!!! It is working with wpa, great job Warren.
Cheers

I am stating the obvious, but have you ensured that the parameters set in knetwork manager match your router? With no encryption, I guess the only paramteres would be essid and channel. Knetworkmanager works for me with wpa encryption enabled, so should work unencrypted.

...but I have discovered that hanging at 28% is a known bug for the chipset bcm43xx (and possibly others) when trying to connect to unencrypted networks:

Some consolation at least.

Interesting. I never tried

Interesting. I never tried to connect unencrypted. Bad policy anyway. Works fine with WPA. I also use MAC addressing. Fool proof, No, but better than giving my neighbors a free ride.

With a fresh install of Beta4 Knetworkmanager works perfectly (WEP encryption).

Podcasts are cool but a Mepis-YouTube video library of Mepis' video clips would be awesome. Be great to see Warren and crew in action!

I upgraded and on first connection, I was only offered wep options for hex or binary, no wpa options were available.
