Mepis hates Voodoo Cards

LinuxWorld's picture

Hello all,

i know the card is old but it is sufficient for my job.
It seems now that I have to buy a Nvidia or something else to enjoy a better graphic performance
in Mepis. Or maybe not? Libglide 3 is installed, everthing is fine but I can see that the card is not working with the same power as it was in windows before. When I start a win32 game in WINE, then i get the message that Glide is not detected. I do not understand why, It is installed (glide3) or not? There is no support for Voodoo and Linux anywhere and the few resources i have found are all complicated and nothing easy to do for a fresh OS changer like me (from window 98 to Mepis Linux).
Strange that such a great piece of hardware like a Voodoo Gfx card are obviously not welcomed in Linux. Anyways maybe someone has a golden hint to fix this?
P.s.: by the way not even the simple game "Tuxcart" works here. Do not say that the voodoo3 is not good enough for it Eye-wink.:

here is my glxinfo ("libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual..."came up more times, i just deleted them for the post.:

Need different glide3

Apparently Ubuntu users have problems with this too.

Look at this thread -- if you need more, search http://www.ubuntuforums.org on something like "voodoo dapper"

(Dapper is the release of Ubuntu that is used for our packages in Mepis 6.0)

Mepis can do Voodoo Cards

Mike is right you need glide3 in my case its libglide3 to make it work on Mepis3.4.3 correctly.

By the way whitch version of Mepis are you running i didnt see it in your post LinuxWorld ?

Mepis can do Voodoo Cards very well i have foud, after searching the world there are two ways to get it handled because the .deb packages dont work for this version . It looks like downloading and compiling it from source or alien an earlier rpm whitch i did for 3.4.3. And its a super improvement allmost unbelievable speed increase. Glxgears in konsole says 1241.4 FPS but the gui is crawling apparently not made for this card. While its not perfect it works , games and gl screensavers work ok. What can i say its a hack but the needed packages for the OS that fits this card seem to have fallen off the planet! Unless somebody has a copy backed up & are willing to share.

Debian has a package that might work on your system, dont know what it is. But if you need what i have just post back.

I am running Mepis 6.0 only on my home work computer.
What's that package you are talking about? where can i get , what i have to do? btw: i also have libglide3 installed and mesa and who knows what. i am not clear about all that stuff. once i deinstalled MESA and it removed my half system. maybe u could enlighten me whats that all about with libglide3, mesa, tdfx and tell where to get that secret voodoo package Eye-wink. Thanks man,

Where is it

The secret package for me was libglide3 that is compiled from the mesa sources but i dont think the one i have will work on your version of Mepis due to gcc changes & bunches of other stuff like xorg. Mepis 3.4.3 used xfree86 for video.

Long and short of it is im not sure what 6.0 needs yet for the voodoo3 card. In this rig now i have xlibmesa-dri xlibmesa-gl libglu1-mesa and libglide3 and it screams so in theory at least this card aint dead & its only got 32 meg onboard.

Im installing SM-32-beta 4 on that rig right now it should be similar to 6.0, so ill have to get back to you on what i find.

jim

EDIT: Well looks like trouble in paradise, libglide3 makes the screensavers work fine BUT the games are dead . Ran tuxcart in konsole as su and get a libgl warning 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2e on and on but the kicker is i get a segmentation fault to boot.

Im thinking libglide3 is somebodys baad.

I will try the one i converted later im pooped.

Little update

As yet no cure for voodoo3 on 6.0 & it may be a while if ever.

The good news is it works good in 3.4.3 and i think all around a better fit for your hardware. Better you just have to install three packages on a fresh install of Mepis 3.4.3, two from the Sarge repos the other i converted from RPM , glide3 i couldnt find from Debian . Might not have been looking where it is but this works & i will send it to you. Still got errors in glxgears text but frame rates are good so i dont think its a biggie. The three packages i installed are glide3 libglide3 and libgle3 that was installed with libglide3.

If you want to give 3.4.3 a try let me know where to send glide3.

More tidbits

If you want the voodoo3 to work perfectly try Mepis Lite 3.3.1 and install libglide3 and libgle3 from the Sarge repos & watch glxgears go with no error messaages.

Mepis Lite may be around for a while if you want to use one of the voodoo cards with no hassels. I still like 3.3.1 any way, so for the oldies and my voodoo3 it makes a good pair.

Mepis 3.4.3 likes Voodoo more.

Ya, that was it. I changed to 3.4.3, downloaded libglide3 and its packages. Good suggestion since the old Voodoo3 now runs smoothly and glxgears shows 1400 fps and thats it. The system is more responsive and faster than with 6.0, so i stay with it.

What is the difference between 3.4.3 and 6.0? Looks all the same...is this an old version? and why they dont offer the same support and performance in 6.0? anyways, the graphic performance is very nice now and solved but i got a few new issues which i will post right away. but for the old vooodoo and older hardware I recommend to all future readers to try 3.4.3 and libglide3.

SM32-6.04-beta4 Voodoo3 works

A little good news for people with Voodoo3 cards and rigs that can handle Simply Mepis 32 6.04beta4. I have in the process of updating two rigs with Warren' latest updates stumbled on a workable package set to accelerate the voodoo3 card i have. I noticed an updated libglu1 package in latest updates and decided to give it one more go with 6.04-b4 instead of 6.0 in light of the pending release of 6.04, big surprise is it works and quite well i might add. If youre hanging on to that 3thru5 card im sure you will be pleased with the performance increase. Tuxracer and tuxcart both play nicely along with the euphoria screen savers i use. Im not much of a gamer but if any one knows of an accelerated easy installable game to test it with i would like to do so.

On to the meat. When upgrading the nvidia rig i removed nvidia-glx as per Warren' tip & all went without a hitch reinstalling the glx package at cli with a reboot. The voodoo3 based rig on the other hand removed some video drivers and installed the libglu1 package , i had removed all but the two base packages before updates to avoid unexpected problems. Then started trying combinations of packages i thought might work with the new libglu1 , it got so bad it would kick me to login screen when trying tuxracer. In short order it was obvious that libglu1 wasnt the magic bullet i had hoped. So i tried the glide3 package i converted from RPM and libglu1 was removed then added libgle3 & libgle3-device and a couple of packages were installed with the device package then finally libglide3. And then we had working games and screensavers that worked. Unfortunately i didnt make note of the two packages installed with libgle3-device but they should be tacked on as it did for me. So finally the magic packages on my rig at least are glide3 libgle3 libgle3.device and libglide3.

If you have one of these cards with a rig capable of running 6.04 b4 i would appreciate you giving this a try as a test to make sure its reproduceable. And its OK if you have a little fun along the way.
