Mepis does not "see" my external hard drive

I have a fresh,just out of the box seagate 100G hard drive. I just reloaded Mepis 6.0-2 and it show no sign of seeing the drive. I loaded mepis with the drive connected. I have checked Kwick disk and can still find nothing. What am I missing?

Sorry, l didn't read that it was an external. I don't have one as such so l don't know the answer. I have an 80G drive in a Smart Drive case and it attaches to my computer via USB and l use it for storage and it shows up on my desktop no problem. I'm not sure if yours is formatted out of the box or not.
