Athlon64 3800+ / MSI K9AGM / Radeon x1950 Pro : failure

Alright: hardware specs are in the subject, but again : Athlon64 3800+ / MSI K9AGM / Radeon x1950 Pro :

In "normal" video mode Mepis starts up, runs through the blue splash screens, and before X starts, drops back to a black screen.

The last lines are:

SEtting up ALSA...done
[ 224.624323. ioctl32(splashy:1132): Unknown cmd fd(0) cmd(00004610){00} arg (57371d98) on /linux/etc/splashy/splashy.fifo

then I just get a blinking cursor that I am able to type at.

In "vesa" mode I get a little bit further. I am able to log into Mepis64, but that is about it. KDE locks up while trying to load, leaving the bar at the bottom with all of the icons on the left hand side, the clock on the right hand side, and nothing else.

AMD 64 X2 4800 – Linux/MEPIS noob unable to get to desktop

Hi All …

I hope someone can help me with this problem …

  1. Hardware: a new box with AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4800, ASUS M2A-VM, ATI Radeon X1250
  2. I downloaded the .iso and .md5. - opened, burned (4x), verified and compared md5 - used ImgBurn.
    - Some options hang on the GUI Progress Screen at around 80%.
    - Some options hang with text at: [ 224.624323. ioctl32(splashy:1132): Unknown cmd fd(0) cmd(00004610){00} arg (57371d98) on /linux/etc/splashy/splashy.fifo
  3. I tried all the options (many times) with no better success than the default.

I ordered the SimplyMEPIS-64 6.5 Bootable DVD thinking I was missing the secret code after days and a zillion different trys. The received DVD appears to have the same results. With both I CAN get to the desktop on a 32 bit XP machine.

Do I need to partition, or do anything to prep the drives first ... or is this box just incompatible? (GParted says the SATA drives are unallocated /dev/sda and /dev/sdb.)

Please let me in on the successful, missing secret process, if there is one.

Thanks.
