simplymepis 6.0, amd X2 4400 and boinc (seti at home) questions
Posts: 5
I just built a new box today with an amd X2 4400. Running seti at home using the boinc frontend. It shows only one work unit running, which means that boinc is only seeing one processor instead of two. Does mepis natively support two processors? My preferences at seti at home are properly set up for 2 processors. Or maybe I've done something wrong? Any help/advice/hand holding is appreciated. thanks...john

You can look in kinfocenter

You can look in kinfocenter and see if you see 2 processors or in top press 1, see if it will display cpu0 and cpu1
boinc might not know how to use SMP.

Thanks to all responders. The command "cat /proc/cpuinfo" will also show if the OS sees the proper number of processors. I tried installing the SMP kernels but failed miserably. Wrote down what synaptic showed I had installed and then went looking for the same files with the 'smp' designation. Got a nifty yellow triangle with a skull and crossed bones. A newbie suffering from CRS (Can't Remember Squat). Tried two other livecds and ended up installing one of them (pclos) and boinc is using both processors just fine. Waiting for the new simplymepis and then I'll install that. Again thanks. ..john

To run more than one

To run more than one processor on one motherboard you need to use a kernel which has SMP (Symmetric Muti-Processor) support compiled in. I believe that the new SimplyMEPIS-CD_6.0-4-beta4_amd64.iso does have such a kernel.
Beyond that, you may need to run two instances of the seti client. I don't know about seti but folding@home only recently released an SMP client; previously we had to run an instance of the mono-processor client for each processor.
