No sound - 2 sound cards
Posts: 76
MEPIS 2004.06 ran fine on my computer, including sound. Since upgrading to MEPIS 6, I have no sound output.
I have 2 sound cards, one on the motherboard, and the other a Soundblaster Live. The Soundblaster Live is used for the speakers, VOIP, etc., and the second is used for other operations - usually amateur radio.
I've tried ALSA, OSS, and automatic detection in the settings, but still have no sound out.
Any help appreciated.

You could fire up the previous Mepis cd and do a lsmod in konsole and print the screen for later refrence in searching for drivers . Very good to know what drivers work. Luck.

Check the switches in KMix carefully, too. Those tiny LEDs can be confusing. lol
I didn't think I had sound with a new install of 6.0-4 on my wife's laptop last night. But, when I checked Kinfo and saw the sound detected, and saw drivers loaded when I used lsmod, I figured that something else must be the issue.
One of the sliders it needed checked on was not checked on. So, try the available options in KMix to make sure it's just not a mixer configuration issue.

Could you help me know how to disable only one of the sound cards, or as in Windows, choose which one is the default or main sound card?

Probably the easiest is turn off onboard sound in bios, that way you dont have to open it up and play with hardware. Cant tell you how to get in bios though most you hit delete key at first sign of text on screen after hitting on button or power on switch to boot up. But the process varies from vender to vender mainly on oem rigs. Some will inform you of this special key if you watch closely when booting.
I highly recommend you fire up the live cd as i mentioned before to identify the drivers that work with your two sound systems, the .06 ver. you had loaded before. It may save a lot of time. On the other hand if you disable one the system may detect and set up the remaining card and later do the same for onboard chip. No way to know for sure till tried but with knowledge of what works with the hardware it saves a lot of time looking for drivers & testing.

no sound - 2 sound cards (fixed)

During upgrading to 6.5 I noticed that the sound worked with the live CD before installing. So, I checked the System sound settings and Kmix settings for the live CD, then modified the installed settings to match them.

I had the same problem...Kmix was showing Intel sound chip set and my Soundblaster live (Dell). I just entered BIOS and turned off the intel sound chip set, and I had sound after restart...I hope this helps...

Its near impossible to troubleshoot your problem without hardware info. But i would disable or remove one to have a better chance of success.
I doubt you will get many replies wothout more specifics.
