Upgrade reverts /etc/apt/preferences

I finally decided to get caught up on package updates, even though most of them have "grave" or "critical" bugs reported by apt-listbugs. But I took the precaution of imaging the partitions first.
The repositories are the standard ones, except that the dapper-backports (main restricted) and dapper-backports (universe multiverse) repositories are enabled.
When asked, I always chose to retain the current configuration settings for a package.
I only encountered one minor issue. The file /etc/apr/preferences reverted to the original version, removing the "pins" I had added for the nvidia packages. This was easily corrected.
