this is what I see:
The system starts and brings the MEPIS startup Menu:
MAPIS Make Selection
MAPIS at HDA5, kernel 2.6.15-26.386
Windows at HDA1
MEMTest
..down by the command line shows:
Root=/dev/hda5 nomce quiet vga=791
...then I hit enter by highlighting "MAPIS at HDA5...
...the following screen messages flashes by:
Root (hd0,4)
filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinux-2.6.15-26.386 root=/dev/hda5 nomce quiet vga=791
...then all i get it's a blank screen and stays forever.
btw. windoze works fine when is selected.
Thank you for trying to help.

Try running the live cd with root login gui

And edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst to look like this.
title MEPIS at hda5, kernel 2.6.15-26.386
root (hd0,04)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-26.386 root=/dev/hda5 nomce quiet vga=791
boot
Be sure to look in the /boot folder and make sure the kernel or vmlinus version is exactly the same in grub, like the -dashes and .dots spaces etcetera. Grub doesnt tolerate too many errors. Good luck!

Thanks Jim,
well I just couldn't see anything wrong with it, so I went to back to scratch and re-installed Mapis, so far I have rebooted a few times from Mapis with no errors, i have gone and rebooted to windoze with no errors, so right now i can reboot to either OS and works fine, I hate not to know what went wrong the first time, now I have just done 119 updates in Mapis, rebooted to Mapis all looks well, i'll do some work before I go back to windoze and flip back to Mapis again... i'll let you know.

Try shutting the system all the way down on reboots when changing OS so all conflicting code is cleared from bios. Do you still see grub at boot time? If not reinstall grub with live cd. Windoze may be fixing mbr , i dont know cant tell by the info in your post.
