Webcam functionality needed

Currently webcams are extremely difficult or impossible for the average user on Mepis (such as our 0ac8:305b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. Vimicro webcam). We need functionality when we plug in a USB webcam similar to flash drives, headsets, etc.

Also it would be very desirable to have virtual meeting capability where you can have a conference call on Gizmo Project, see everyone at the meeting on a webcam or photo, have the ability to show someone's desktop, whiteboard, etc. This could save a huge amount of time and resources spent on physical meetings.

Two separate questions

To your first: webcams are somewhat problematic in general in Linux, it is not particular to MEPIS. The situation has improved as KDE has developed, which now supports many webcams OOTB. Here is a list of webcams that have been tested in Ubuntu you might consult:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/?action=fullsearch&context=180&value=webcam&titlesearch=Titles

And this 2-yr old discussion of webcams in Linux is still useful:

To your second: Ekiga works pretty well in MEPIS for video conferencing, though no whiteboard capacity at the moment.

Hope this helps.

Re: Webcam functionality needed

Our 0ac8:305b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. Vimicro webcam and our 046d:08d7 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate STX webcam now work on Kubuntu 7.04 A5 . We need to get this capability into Mepis ASAP!

It will probably come

It will probably come when MEPIS upgrades the version of KDE that it uses once the developers judge it stable enough.
