HP Photosmart C3180 and C4180
Posts: 1
I have a C4180 which I installed on a Dell 8200 Desktop (about 3 yrs old) and a brand new Dell E1505 Laptop. The unit works perfectly with the laptop but the scanner does not work with the Desktop. HP has not been able to help.
Also, I bought my daughter a C3180 to use with her Dell XPS Laptop and again, the scanner will not work.
HP spent 2 hours on the phone with her and finally they gave up. HELP!!!

Just installed a C4180

Just installed a C4180 myself in SM 6beta4.
All works fine, print, scan & card reader.
The link in above post has the correct info for installing this printer/scanner.
Just love my new HP C4180

Have you tried updating HPLIP?

I have a PSC1110, and one thing I have done after installing SimplyMEPIS is to download and install the latest version of HPLIP (http://hplip.sourceforge.net) either from source code, or via synaptic.
Then reboot SimplyMEPIS before you set up your printers. This is necessary for the scanning, printing and card reading components to be updated properly, ensuring that every function of your device is properly working.
You should be able to use Xsane, Kooka, or xscanimage (by itself or with OpenOffice.org or the GIMP) without having to worry about whether the scanner has been set up or not.
The only thing you need to worry about is setting up the printer.
MEPIS uses the KDE printer setup utility. When setting up a printer with this utility, you will need to select the HPLIP backend. In the URI, you will see hp:/ followed by your printer device name.
When you use the HPLIP backend, you should be able to print, scan and/or read memory cards on your device without waiting for one function to complete.
While the current version of HPLIP will work on your device, I recommend updating to eliminate any bugs that may have been in the release of HPLIP, and to ensure that if you upgrade your all-in-one device or printer, the current version will work with the new printer.

Or, upgrade SimplyMEPIS

Or, use the latest 6.5 Release Candidate (RC1 was just announced), or 6.5 Final once it's available.
Warren updated HPLIP to the latest version during the development cycle a couple of betas ago (even though the Ubuntu Dapper repositories are roughly 10 releases behind now).
The little details are what make SimplyMEPIS better. Kudos to Warren.

What version of simplymepis?

If you're using a 6.x version of MEPIS, see this thread:
http://www.mepis.org/node/11444
Chances are, you have the wrong printer selected (you have to select the second occurrence of many HP Printers for everything including scanning to work right). You'll see screen prints in the thread.
