My List of Bugs

Hoping it might be of use to the developers, I wish to enter my comments on items that might deserve attention prior to the final release of MEPIS-32 6.04. I sure hope that the developers read this post.

But first let me say that this is potentially a very good Linux distribution - far superior to the previous version.

That having been said, I have found the following problems:

1) The GUI is sometimes shifted to the right upon login. The shift is horizontal and extends about 1 1/2 inches. I use a Samsung SyncMaster 931B monitor, with an nVidia graphics card. I have set the graphics driver to nv, and the resolution to 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz. The problem is intermittent. Logging out and re-logging in seems to solve it.

2) Occasionally the Internet connection is not established at boot up. In such cases, I need to establish the connection from Network assistant by re-setting radio button from "manual" to "automatic." This problem is intermittent, and cannot be traced to any specific activity.

3) The "Get Mail" extension (ver 2.5.2 and 2.5.3) for Firefox will not read mail. I have used this with other Linux distributions and it always works perfectly. It should bring up Thunderbird. It opens Thunderbird when "New Message" is selected, but not when "Read Mail" is selected. I have established Thunderbird as the default mail client in the KDE Component Chooser and have ensured that prefs.js in Firefox properly reflects Thunderbird as the default mail client. Same result when using KMail as default e-mail client. This seems to be a MEPIS problem, rather than a Firefox problem.

3) The OpenGL screensavers are not working.

4) The Clock screensaver, in the "Miscellaneous" group of screensavers had worked, but then stopped working. I haven't checked the other screensavers, but there may be a problem with them also.

5) Finally, I noticed that the beta version does not have most recent version of OpenOffice.org. Not really a bug, but I hope that the final version will have the latest version of OpenOffice.org.

Hope these problems can be resolved. If they can, I think you have a very promising version of Linux. Hope you take these comments in the spirit intended.

Items 1 and 3 (theOpenGL

Items 1 and 3 (theOpenGL comment) are most assuredly related to the video driver you have chosen. Have you tried the Nvidia legacy or official driver.

Item 2 - Once Automatic is set in Mepis network-assistant it persists through booting unless you upgrade to a newer version of Network Assistant

Item 3 (the Firefox comment) is most likely not Mepis related but some configuration glitch in Firefox, or the extension. Beyond that I do not know the answer.

Thank you for replying. I'll

Thank you for replying.

I'll try changing to the nVidia legacy driver.

Regarding the setting of Automatic in the Network Assistant, I had indeed set it when MEPIS first booted without a network connection and had to go through the process again when it again booted without the network connection. So I think there is a problem with MEPIS: it should not lose that setting.

Came upon another problem.

Came upon another problem. I noticed that several people have already posted problems with a possible memory leak. I, also, have noticed a substantial degradation in performance as I worked with the system without rebooting. I didn't record any metrics, but there may indeed be a memory leak.
