What's happening with Beryl, Xorg 7.1, Mepis 6.5 and Ubuntu?

“…SimplyMEPIS still relies 80% on Dapper packages, but the rest are now provided by MEPIS amd maintained by MEPIS. During the coming week we will be integrating Beryl to work the MEPIS way.”
Is SimplyMEPIS moving further and further from Ubuntu? What will happen with the release of Feisty Fawn and Mepis? Did Mepis use the Dapper pools merely as a starting point and will continue to diverge and become it's own entity again?
The release of SimplyMEPIS 6.5 leads me to believe that Mepis will not be Ubuntu compatible for very long. I was hoping to gain some long term stability from this version of Mepis. Am I wrong in this assumption?

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Warren and the entire Mepis team and community for what is one of the best distros around. I really had my doubt when Mepis went "Ubuntu based", because I'd tried Ubuntu twice before and hated it, but Mepis has remained true to itself while making good use of Ubuntu resources. I left 3.4.3 for Gentoo (my all time favorite distro), but I came back to try 6.5 beta and so far I am absolutely loving it. Everything works out of the box, and very nearly everything I want to run (minus games, naturally) is in the box!

I don't think your assumption is the case. Warren has always had his own repository for specific packages he creates for the benefit of Mepis ... that's what makes it Mepis otherwise you would just go and download and use Debian or Ubuntu or whatever. Because manpower is at a premium for Warren and his great Mepis distro he won't waste time duplicating what is already out there and he deems to be workable but where he sees room for improvement he will tackle specific things for our benefit and the benefit of Simply Mepis. In other words if Ubuntu doesn't have something he or we want included he will create it or go and get it.
