Application Hotkey (also known as keyboard shortcut)

When I used Windows, I set up function keys to open applications without having to go through the menus. For example, I assigned Wordpad editor to open whenever I press the F4 key.
I just figured out how to make this association in KDE. Here's how to do it.
First, the application you want has to be installed. Make sure it's installed first.
Now, let's say I want KDE to open OpenOffice.org Word processor whenever I press the F8 key. First press F8 key to see if it's already assigned to an application.
Using the KDE menu, go to
System....System Configuration (Settings)
Click "Keyboard Shortcuts" under "Regional & Accessibility folder"
Click "Command Shortcuts" tab. This opens a list of installed app.'s.
Click the icon to the left of "Office" to open list of Open-Office app.'s
Scroll down the list. Click on "Open Office.org Word Pro..."
Click "Custom" under "Shortcut for Selected Command"
This opens a small dialog box with a "Shortcut" field. Press F8 key. The dialog box makes the assignment & closes automatically. Click Apply. Click Ok.
Now the OpenOffice Word app. opens whenever you press F8. Very handy.
