In his recent announcement http://www.mepis.org/node/12677, Warren states "Users are also reminded to disable the Ubuntu restricted pools, since they contain kernel updates that are not MEPIS compatible."

I'm using MEPIS 6.0, not one of the newer versions, so maybe that doesn't apply to me.

But what are "Ubuntu restricted pools"? I'm using the default repositories, and several of them have the sections set to "main restricted". Should "restricted" be removed from all of those?

Warren's comment intended

Warren's comment intended that you remove the restricted repositories

If you want to do the upgrades and want to accept the changes to sources.list
they'll be removed for you

Practically, you can leave them in there if you prefer to -- just don't upgrade kernel or kernel components from those repositories -- makes sure your kernel upgrades (if you do any) are from Mepis repositories only

At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(Linux_distribution) , under "Package classification and support", it states that "Non-free device drivers remain in the Restricted component, where support is present because of their importance, but limited due to lack of, or limited, access to the source code."

Are kernels and kernel components in the restricted section because they include such drivers?

It also states that "It is intended that Main and Restricted contain all software needed for a general-use desktop operating system."

If I remove the restricted sections from sources.list, will I miss updates needed to support other packages?
