6.5 beta 6 LIVE CD -OK, install gives a blank screen

I am working on my triple boot system, based on an Asus m2npv-vm motherboard.
I have XP on sda1 and sda2 for Mepis and sda3 will be for xubuntu.

I had Mepis 6.0 working on sda2 for a few weeks but it stopped with the MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC.

So I thought I would try the 6.5 beta.
The live CD booted fine, (I like the new look/art work) Internet and sound work, So I install. (making sure to umount all the other drives I have).
Install normally, no errors, grub to MBR. ( I did retain /home, was this a mistake?
Reboot, remove CD, grub lists Windows and Mepis at sda2. XP option boots normally.

If I select Mepis latest kernel or the 2.6.15-17 (I think), in each case, the screen goes dark, no disk activity, nothing. Just sits there.
I reinstalled, same result.
md5 checked out matched, burned at 8X, live CD OK, so how can I boot Mepis?

Could it be the MP-BIOS bug? Before it would start booting, then error, here it does not even try to start.

THanks
Jay

Any suggestions here????

Did I post to the wrong forum?
I am stuck, old Mepis does not boot due to Bios bug,
new Mepis has a blank screen.

What is a poor Mepisite to do?

Thanks
-Jay

That is indeed a very

That is indeed a very strange issue. when the live CD works, you would expect the installed version to boot up as well.

This is a shot in the dark, but some things to check:
- Strange issue in BIOS with harddisk settings?
- Is the harddisk partitioned correctly?
- Does Windows boot OK via Grub? Can you post the menu.lst of the installed Grub?
- When you boot live CD, press Esc in the splash screen to see possible boot warnings that could give you a clue.

Not much help, but I am a bit clueless here....

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

You may also try the boot

You may also try the boot option vga=noraml rather than vga=791 0r whatever the number is there. Sounds like a video display problem.

Not sure what's going on

Not sure what's going on usually if CD works and install doesn't it's a problem that happened during installation (bad read from CD?). You could try to reinstall.

You didn't tell us (or I missed it) what video card you have.

Another issue, bugs that are in Beta6 are now irrelevant since there's a Beta7 out, so don't expect people to spend much time on this one.

Some more information

Carlops,

I don't think it is a hard disk issue, as I had Mepis 6.0 working on that partition earlier. It died due to the above mentioned BIOS BUG.

Windows boots normally. I will post menu.lst tonight, as I am away from the machine now.

I'll try the Esc during live boot.

Thanks
Jay

possible vid problem?

Rich,

I agree sounds like a video display problem. I will look at the options tonight.

Thanks
Jay

rc1,2,3

i've also had these issues.I solved them by changing boot on live cd-choosing f3 and selecting 1024x768 -then tab to vga 791 and changing to 788 - then boot default even splashy showed up-I'm running an acer monitor al1916w flat screen-I've also tried on phillips regular monitor and it also worked.I'm running pentinum 3&4.It also works running amd.I've installed mepis and set points remained when distro was installed.thanks John
