[SOLVED] GeForce 6200 and mepis 6.0 i386 CD Version
Posts: 97
After about a 2 year hiatus, I am back trying Mepis again. Mainly due to the fact that I can now run IE in Linux (I need it for work.. I tested IEs4linux with mepis and it works!! So, now I am back and ready to remove MS and their genuine advantage from all of my PCs!
My problem is with the Nvidia-glx and mepis? Why does it not work at all? I have a Geforce 6200 and a 19" LCD. I tried legacy drivers and got a horribly discolored screen, I then tried "New" nvidia drivers and dropped to a text screen for login. I have tried several different methods from here and from mepislovers, and still no luck. I have tried installing from the mepis tweaks and through synaptics. The funy thing is, when I booted from the live CD and chose the Nvidia boot, I saw the nvidia splash screen, so I know it works.
Is there an accurate walkthrough for installing a simple nvidia driver on here or somewhere that actually will work?

I have the same card, is it AGP or PCI-E ? Mine (it's PCI-E) worked in 6.0 just fine...

Mine is an AGP.
I need to "re-learn" all I have forgotten in the past 2 years, but I am trying.
I tried every forum post I could find on Nvidia and Mepis and never got it working with 6.0. I did, however, get it working with 6.5 and it is running very well. Everything I tried seemed to break Linux, and it takes such little time to re-install Mepis, I figured I would just keep trying different combinations until I got it.
On a side note, Wifi support seems to be much better now as I am using a 54g USB wireless adapter and it works like a charm with ndiswrapper. I have everything working with the exception of my Brother wireless network printer. I see Brother has done some work with Linux support, so I will try and get it working in the coming days when I get time.
It's good to be back with Mepis!!!

I went ahead and marked this solved, because it *does* look like you found a solution.
I'll also mention for future reference that, when you're messing-around with things like video or pointing device settings, make a back-up of your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file
or
/etc/X11/XF86-Config-4 file
It's a quicker turn-around than reinstalling, if you goof-up a setting, and it leaves you a system file that you can collect annotations in, as to what works for your situation, and what doesn't.

I guess I don't bother to recommend people to backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf because they can restore that anytime using MEPIS X Config (or whatever name that tool has, depending on version).

Probably just habit on my part, because I'm carrying-over several points of customization in the X configuration. I hate losing that stuff.
