Chaintech AV710 Sound Card Revision
Posts: 11
As I have explained on MepisLovers ( http://www.mepislovers.org/index.php/topic,5002.0.html ), the Chaintech AV710 sound card I'm attempting to get working with any recently released Mepis (6.0 and 6.5 included) is presenting quite the problem. The Chaintech AV710's primary output (the high definition jack/optical output) is the selling point for this cheaply priced card.
When attempting to use the card's high definition output in Mepis 6.0 or 6.5 in conjunction with headfi.org's user-submitted asound.state files, the card refuses to operate normally. Using these same asound.state files in Ubuntu Dapper Drake and Edgy Eft (and following them up with alsactl restore), the Chaintech AV710 operates through it's high definition optical jack no questions asked.
I've posted this in the development section as it's been a reoccuring problem in both Mepis 6.0 and Mepis 6.5 (as recent as the beta 7 just released). Seeing as the AV710 is a popular card amongst audio enthusiasts, I'd like to ask the crew to possibly take a look at this for either this release or the next release of Mepis.
As I am currently awaiting more replies on Mepis Lovers with the post I have just linked, I am still unsure if the problem cannot be fixed as it is now. Still, I will say I have spent a good deal of time using the asound.state files some have suggested and other practical methods in an attempt to get this particular card operational. I will provide any information that needs to be provided upon request in regards to this card and Mepis 6.5, as I currently have Mepis 6.5 beta 7 installed on a partition.
Thank you, Mepis - despite the sound card's problems, I love this distro.

I'm wondering if you have compared the kernel modules between the Ubuntu that you were able to get working, and the latest MEPIS beta (7)?
Any difference in modules loaded in Ubuntu; which are not being loaded in MEPIS, would give us a definite direction in which to go, as well as making it an outright easy fix.

No, I have not checked the kernel modules being loaded in Ubuntu or Mepis, and unfortunately, though I have tried and tested many distros, I am rather incapable when it comes to knowing the commands you'd like me to use to list these said modules.
Knowing you'd prefer I check both the kernel modules of Ubuntu with a working AV710 and Mepis 6.5 Beta 7 with a nonworking AV710, by your suggestion how would I check what kernel modules are loaded in these distributions? On your reply and a learning of how to perform this action, I will gladly reload Ubuntu Edgy Eft on another partition and set up the AV710 for your reference.

I'm sorry, I assumed that you had parallel installations. If you do happen upon the occasion of a dapper or edgy install, comparing the output of lsmod (as root) would give us something to compare.

If you'll give me today and "perhaps" tommorrow as a result of a heavy work schedule, I'll load my Edgy and/or Dapper CD for this trial - they're still laying around within the closet behind me. I will gladly do this, no questions asked.

I have an hour or two made available to me by some hiccups in work, thus I'm attempting to go as fast as I can on this to give you a working copy of the output of lsmod.
Lsmod in Mepis 6.5 states the following:

Hopefully (if time allows), I will have a working copy of Ubuntu Dapper Drake with a working Chaintech AV710 for you in the next hour or two, otherwise it may be tonight if not tommorrow before I'm able to access this due to work.

Though I haven't fully checked the working ability of the AV710 with AVIs and MP3s, the card appears to be working to some extent as evidenced by the Ubuntu Dapper Drake bongo startup sound playing before entering my username at the login. While I would prefer to use this card under Edgy Eft as it's more recent, unfortunately I cannot find my Edgy Eft CD for the life of me. Downloading Edgy Eft again will take another two days straight of downloading due to my 56k.
The lsmod with the Chaintech AV710 under Ubuntu Dapper Drake (with the startup login bongo playing) is the following:

My apologies about not posting this sooner, but work caused my time to stretch a little thin. I would have preferred to test the AV710 with movies and music, but as I have not downloaded their required codecs, I hope the startup bongo (with my audio devices plugged in directly to the optical output port) is evidence the card appears to be working.
If you require the asound.state and .asoundrc file(s) I'm using, I'll throw those your way as well. I'll check here for further requests coming from your end on a daily basis. Thank you.

I would like to give a great thanks to the Mepis development crew here for showing support in this matter. Upon downloading Mepis 6.5 RC1 by updating the required packages within Synaptic (from Mepis 6.5 Beta 7), I tried the asound.state file I had commonly used in Ubuntu. The end result, after a small amount of tinkering, is a working AV710 through the optical/high definition output.
I am quite greatful for this.
The Mepis Lovers thread in which this all originated contains the asound.state file I'm using for my AV710. The link is located below:
http://www.mepislovers.org/index.php/topic,5002.0.html
Once again, thanks to the developers. I love this distro.
Seconded

going to second this: any information we can provide and we'll try to provide it.
