Xorg goes black on startup with Radeon 9700 pro

I just installed MEPIS 6.5 Beta7 x86-64, I can get the system to run smooth with the VESA drivers but when I set it to the Xorg Radeon drivers it freezes the system when KDM launches. If I try to get a console it will not switch, the only course of action is to hit the reset button. I've had this happen now with Debian etch and MEPIS, and wondering if anyone else had this problem or knows how to fix it. If you need I'll post my xorg.conf or any other info needed.
System is:
ASUS K8VX motherboard
AMD 64 3000+
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
250 GB harddrive
Sound Blaster Audigy2
ATI drivers

ATI fglrx driver will not work with AIGLX/Beryl
Use instructions here to install ATI fglrx driver:

Download the fglrx driver from ati and install it with the module-assistant method (ubuntu/dapper)

with I could be of help, but I've not had problems like that with R300 based GPU's (Radeon 9600 and 9800)
Something did occur to me though. Are you attempting to load the KDE-3D desktop?
