Dialup stopped working
Posts: 4
I have been running Mepis 3.3 for a long time. I have never had any problems with KPPP and dial-up networking until now.
It just suddenly stopped working. To my knowledge, I did nothing that could have caused this. I installed no software. I didn't run any new programs.
The error that I receive is the following:
pppd daemon died unexpectedly. Exit status: 2.
Under details I get:
Can't open options file /etc/ppp/options: Not a directory.
I have an /etc/ppp file, but not an /etc/ppp directory.
Is it normal to not have an /etc/ppp directory with Mepis 3.3 and thus maybe my error is related to something else?
Could the attributes on /etc/ppp been somehow changed to turn it into a file instead of a directory?
What should I try to get KPPP working again?
Note that I can boot Mepis 3.3 for the CD-ROM configure KPPP the same way that it was configured on my boot drive and I can get connected to the network.
So this rules out my ISP or the dialup number and account information.
No ppp directory??

Not sure what your problem is, but since you've gotten no response yet I wanted you to know that others share issues related to dial-up.
I use MepisLite (version 3.3.1) on a couple of boxes so maybe our set-ups are similar.
Let's start with some clarification: When you say "I have an /etc/ppp file, but not an /etc/ppp directory," can you confirm the details of this? I ask because I have no "/etc/ppp" file but I do have a "/etc/ppp" directory holding *everything* I need for dial-up.
So if you have a "ppp" file, what kind of file is it? If you don't have a "ppp" directory (i.e., it's not listed at all under /etc or when you click on it no other sub-directories or files open), it sounds as though you've somehow deleted it and need to re-install.
If you clarify this, maybe the solution will become clear as well--to me or to another dial-up user.
