GeForce 6600 (Mepis 6.0) installation problems...

Hi all. Mepis 6 noob here (2 weeks).I tried the System Configuration Route and got a command line on reboot (No GUI). Had to re-install as couldn't figure out how to get back into linux. I need a simple method (no command line antics) to get my GeForce 6600 to work. I'm trying my best to be patient, but things don't always "WORK" with linux like they do in windows. HELP !!!!

Use your Live CD and restore

Use your Live CD and restore X or use the LiveCD and edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the "nvidia" back to "nv". That should get you back in and then try a different driver. Mine is a Nvidia 6600 and l use the newest drive instead of the Legacy.

http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Reinstalling_X_config_file

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nv"
BoardName "unknown"

Getting there....

Thank you for the advice Wayne.

I installed via the MEPIS Utilities but once again booted into the command line. The advice on restoring the GUI via the CD worked perfectly. Thanx.

I am still unsure though as to what to do to get my card working properly?

Are you choosing the new one

Are you choosing the new one as opposed to legacy. Mine won't work with legacy. Also l am using Mepis 6.5 but l still had no problem in 6.0 .

Hi there once again

Hi there once again Wayne.

Yes. I have been choosing the "new" one, and as I say it boots into the command line.

I then enter my user name and password but it still remains in the command line.

Do a re-install from the CD

...Oops.....

Please disregard the following as I saw [too late] that you use 6.0...
The next lines are valid only for the recent 6.5 testversions.

Do a re-install from the CD
Make sure to press F3 and to select your resolution from the dropdown-list.
Then select the second line on the bootmenu (Starting with "Opt-in...."). That should work as your Geforce 6600 is supported by the 'new' NVidia driver that is provided by that boot-option.

You only have on video card

You only have one video card and if your board has onboard video you do have it disabled in the bios, right?

When l do a search in

When l do a search in Synaptic for NVidia l have four packages installed:

nvidia-glx
nvidia-kernel-2.6.15-27-desktop-smp
nvidia-kernel-common
xserver-xorg-video-nv

The second one will depend on which kernel number you are using. Might be worth a try to do it manually via synaptic and see what happens.

Wayne

What kernel are you using?

What kernel are you using? Since my system is dual core l am using the smp kernel. Not sure if that is why you are having different results then me?

I get the impression from your post that you might be using your normal user name and password at command line. If so you should enter (root) at login without brackest and then supply the root password you provided at install. You have to be root at command line to accomplish anything.

After logging in as root issue the command (startx) again without brackets and post a general description of error messages if any. Now keeping in mind you need to press enter after any commands you want to run.

Hi guys me again.

Firstly to Wayne. I have 2 files missing from my synaptic setup. I cannot find either of them in synaptic either. They are the xserver-xorg file as well as the nvidia-kernel-xxx-desktop file ???

To Jim. I re-installed via System Manager and on re-booting got the command line again. I then logged in as "root" and ran "startx".

The main 2 errors I saw were as follows.

Firstly "X process set to priority -11 instead of requested priority -10"

Secondly "API mismatch nvidea kernel module 1.0-8762, but X module has version 1.0-8776"

What now ?

Well things are getting a bit stickie now i forgot about the kernel upgrades & sutch while playing with the latest releases. But the problem is you have a mismatched kernel module and nvidia-glx package, this can be fixed BUT i dont know if a newb can do it without getting in to trouble. There have been a lot of updates to 6.0 and you are behind the curve so to speak.

If you dont have a lot of time invested in your present setup i would recomend upgrading to rc1 of 6.5, that is if youre not on dialup.

It looks like packages for the first kernel have been dropped from the repositorys so the easy way seems to get x back and do some upgrades. So if you are still at the command line do, nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf & enter to edit the nvidia driver section back to nv as in waynes first post. After you do the edit hit Ctrl x then hit y to save the changes nd then enter & enter again to get back to root prompt then do reboot -n enter to reboot then x should be back. After reboot in synaptic do a reload and click on upgradable packages and install the newer kernel & restricted-modules, hopefully that will fix the nvidia issue. Synaptic should install matching packages and a few more wil no doubt tag a-long & thats fine. But if you get too eager with updates you might be in worse shape than now so highlite each and read the docs to try to avoid unexpected changes. Im out of touch with 6.0 lately so i cant say whats ok or not. Mainly now you want restricted modules and the newer kernel, 2.6.15-27-386 mepis or more properly the linux-image-2.6.15-27-386 mepis if its still available. As i said this gets a bit stickie so you may be better off riding with the nv driver till you get better acquainted with this stuff or going to 6.5 rc1 that will have to be your call though. The later one you can pick the nvidia-glx driver from grub splash and its a relative no-brainer. Good luck!

Hi Jim. Thanks for the

Hi Jim.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

I am now in the process of downloading 6.5 RC1 for AMD64.

I have a 192K connection so it will take me 1-2 days.

Will it be possible for me to upgrade my existing installation using the CD or will I have to do a complete new install?

Tony.

james e. thompson's picture

Upgrade

Well thats a good question , but i lean toward fresh installs, at times you can without too many problems save home on install. But the rub is when there are many system changes as between 6.0 and 6.5 rc1 all config files may not be overwritten as they should be. So in this case i would do a complete fresh install ie let it format all partitions when installing without saving home. Also overwriting home after install with the old one is a no no. Better to just save individual personal files you need , they can be copied back without much risk. You have to keep in mind this is a testing version but moving to the final will probably just require updating the system since its a release candidate.

Only other things is press F3 at grub splash for screen resolution you want and scroll down and opt in for the nvidia driver at boot & you should be all set.

Me Back Again... I

Me Back Again...

I downloaded and cit an ISO disc for 6.5_rc1_64.

It installed perfectly and my video card works brilliantly, but I have encountered another problem.

On rebooting I get a pop-up saying "Unable to locate OnTheGo device. Wait 10 sec for device to mount. Please try again".

I then hit the Ok button and can then input my password. On then hitting enter another pop-up says "Could not start kstartupconfig. Check your installation".

I then hit ok and it continues to boot into my main screen, but does not automatically restart my PPPOe connection. I have to then go and do this manually to be able to log on to the net.

Any help please ??

Looks like its having a problem with on the go setup. Wondering if you checked the md5sum of your download iso and the burned disk? If you dont know how to do it just google this site for how to. I have never used dial up modem but see if theres a place to enable start at boot and start when plugged and check it & reboot to see if it works.

Also did you do a complete fresh install without saving home? I havent seen these problems before so i dont know whats up exactly so am gonna ask a lot of questions.

Hiya Jim. Have sorted out

Hiya Jim.

Have sorted out the OnTheGo problem.

Booting straight into my desktop, but the PPPOe connection is not starting automatically as I have requested.

I have to manually restart it after I reboot.

Any advice on that one ?

Tony.
