Scanner install

Hi,
I'm using Mepis 6.0.1
I have connected an Epson scanner (USB). when I launched Kooka, I got a message telling me to go to www.sane-project.org for a backend installer. I did this.

Now using sane, I can run sane-find-scanner and it finds my scanner.
I thn run scanimage -L and it also finds the scanner

then I try scanimage >testimage.png and I get error messages:
Cannot open firmware file /usr/share/sane/snapscan/your-firmware.bin
edit the snapscan.config file
scanimage: open of device snapscan:usb:001:005 failed: Invalid Argument

the directory /usr/share/sane does exist, but it does not have a snapscan directory in it. I can edit the snapscan.config file, but I don't know where the firmware file is or what it is called.
Any idea how to find this out?

Thank you for your time,
Don Jungk

Not sure but your

Not sure but your snapscan.conf is in /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf . When l set up my Artec scanner l had to get the firmware from my windows install and copy it to my home directory and then edit the path to it in my /etc/sane.d/artec48.conf file and add the path to the dev. Since aquiring my digital camera l never use my scanner anymore.

Right, I found the config file, but, since I've never used Windows, I can't go there to get the firmware file. Is this something that Epson might have on their website?

Epson scanner firmware file

I'm going to be installing the new Mepis32 as soon as it goes to final. The computer that I'm going to be installing it on has an Epson USB scanner attached to it, so I have been researching Epson scanners. I found an interesting posting on the Ubuntu forums at the following URL:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=108256

In this URL one of the postings refers to the following URL:

http://snapscan.sourceforge.net/

At the SourceForge URL they say that the .BIN firmware file needs to be uploaded to the scanner to make it work. If you go to the Ubuntu forum at the above URL, posting #5 by psb6m explains how to extract the firmware file. It is located in the ModUsd.cab file. The cabextract program that is talked about in the posting is available through the Synaptic Package Manager.

If you have the Epson scanner software/drivers CD the cab file is in the EScan folder. If you don't have the CD you can download the TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility from the Epson web site. The Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98 file is a self extracting .EXE .ZIP file. It can be opened with Ark. In Konqueror you have to right click the .EXE file, select Open with and then select Utilities/File/Ark. Ark needs help recognizing the file. In the Choose Archive Format dialog left click the down arrow and select Zip Archive. You will see the ModUsd.cab in the pick list.

In the psb6m posting a reference is made to using Debian Sarge main packages. I don't know enough about Debian packages to know whether this is a good idea or not. You might want to check into Debian Sarge-Ubuntu package compatibility before trying to perform a mixed repository upgrade/install.

Thanks, He doesn't

Thanks,
He doesn't specifically mention the 2480 PHOTO scanner that I have, but it is good to know which ones do work

Epson 2480 firmware

In your original posting I didn't see any model number listed for your scanner. At the SourceForge SnapScan web site URL they have a chart listing scanners by vendor and model. The Epson Perfection 2480 is listed in this chart. According to this chart, the Perfection 2480 uses the esfw41.bin firmware file. The esfw41.bin file is the one you are looking for. When you get this file you need to put it in the directory that you have listed in the snapscan.conf. You also need to edit the snapscan.conf to change the your-firmware.bin to read esfw41.bin

The Windows TWAIN driver for this model is available for download at the Epson web site.

Thank you and it works now

Hi GregB and others,
Thank you for the info. I'll get that firmware file because I do want to be able touse the Epson scanner, but in the meantime, I found that and older HP scanner that i have works fine with the Sane backends that i had installed and doesn't need a firmware update.

As always, this forum is a terrific source of info. Thank you all,

Don Jungk

Firmware upload

One correction. It is my understanding that the Epson firmware in question is a firmware upload and not a firmware update. An article that goes into more detail about this can be found at the following URL:

http://www.ofb.biz/article.pl?sid=339

In this article it says that many SnapScan scanners upload the firmware to the scanner at every first use of the scanner.

Hi GregB, Yes, I think it is

Hi GregB,
Yes, I think it is an upload, not an update. I'm not sure why Epson couldn't have put the file in the scanner instead of on a web site or on a CD, probably some good reason.
Thank you for the link, that is good information.
