QTParted in Mepis 6.5 rc1
QTParted, at least mine in Mepis 6.5, doesn't number partitions
the same was as /dev and /mnt see them.
QTParted says my ext3 partion is on hdc5, but I find with 'df -h', that it's
really on hdc6.
This gave me an uneasy feeling during installation, just hoping I didn't wipe out something else on the wrong partition.
Even after install you can look at (my) hdc with QTParted and it says hdc5.
df -h shows we're on hdc6.
I think this is not really a Mepis bug, per se, but QTParted's _use_ in Mepis 6.5 may be in question.

You're not the first person
You're not the first person experiencing trouble with QTParted. Lately, there has been at least one topic dealing with that problem, but I don't remember what the recommended alternatives are.
As for me, when I need a quick partitioning / backup tool, I'm using the SystemRescueCD LiveCD.
qtparted is getting long in the tooth, use gparted
From my understanding, development on qtparted has not been active in along time. gparted is a better alternative and I woudl really like to see qtparted replaced with gparted on the live cd.
You can download a gparted live cd iso image by googling for gparted. In the meantime, qtparted will work, but I'd rely more on the gui representation than the numbering. Qtparted numbers partitions sequentially from the last known number, not by the order in which they appear on the disk in relation to the start and end points of the disk.

Gparted
Hi,
As of today (March 11) you can update your RC1 with some new Mepis updates. A newer version of QTParted ---- and Gparted !
[...but with a somewhat 'strange' configuration....imho, with /dev/mappers/'partitions' next to the regular disks-view].
Now I hope Warren will put Gparted also on the LiveCD in the 6.5 release.

One day later, the new
One day later, the new (Mepis) QTParted solves my problem.
Where else can you get such fast service?
Thanks, Warren
Also, thanks Ko for pointing out the new apt offering.
Gparted version 0.2.5
You're welcome.
Maybe the reason for the "unusual look" of Gparted is its version number: 0.2.5. Don't know why Warren opted for it.
I have always used version >= 0.3. Currently 0.3.4-1
