beeps and halts after 1-2 days of uptime

After 1-2 days of uptime, mepis starts beeping nonstop,
and keyboard starts behaving strangely (like, the typing
feedback to the screen is delayed even though cpu is not loaded).
After that, I need to reboot it or it freezes anyway in
a matter of minutes.

Symptoms do not go away after I disabled the power management
in the bios and after I added 'apm=power-off acpi=off' to grub's menu.lst.

First, I thought this was related to power management because earlier on the
same PC I had similar symptoms with Fedora (this PC is IBM-made), and
with Fedora, the symptoms went away after I disabled the power management in
the bios). With Mepis, symptoms do not go away.

What can I do to diagnose the problem ?

Thanks
Yakov

Check Your Hardware

Yakov, do you have a spare keyboard and/or mouse? What kinds (PS2 or USB)? I would one-at-a-time replace each of them and see if the problem improves or disappears. In other words, replace the keyboard and use if for a day or so and see if the problem disappears. If it does not, put the old keyboard back in place and replace the mouse.

There may be some other hardware issues at hand, but those two are the quickest ones to check.

In /dev/null, no one can hear you type...

Will do. I suspect the KVM

Will do. I suspect the KVM now. I removed it, and changed the keyboard, too.
