Gaim 2

Hallo,
I would be glad to see Gaim 2 in the next MEPIS Linux.
It is much better than the old 1.x.x series. And it even is more stable, even if it is still a beta.
Many popular Distros like Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva and some more had already included the new Gaim.
But it is not in the Dapper Backports so there is no clean, even if that is not that clean, way to include it into the upcoming v6.5.
There are even more reasons to include it. In regard with Mandriva's 2006-release, it became "unpopular" very quick as it had various very popular packages in old version, for example OpenOffice 1 and Firefox 1 (and not 1.5 at that time).
Don't let Gaim become that killer-package for MEPIS
okay it is still not as popular as Firefox or OpenOffice... but Gaim 2 is really great so please include it!
Ciao Hendrik

I just tried it out with "my" beta5 and there it works!
Well then I can understand it... but Gaim2 is really great!
Beta 5 is not a solution too, is it? Or what were its big bugs? Well for me it does work fine.

Yep, that bug. Yeah sure

Yep, that bug. Yeah sure there are no other big bugs as far as I noticed, but even this one is pretty annoying, I'm sure including beta products is not a good idea unless they offer some important benefits over the stable products. What does 2.0.0.beta6 has over 1.5 that's that significant?

File tranfers work in Gaim2,

File tranfers work in Gaim2, where they didn't in the old series... That's the only killer feature, I think.
The Contact List is much better as it has a global off- and online switcher. Then the easy possibility to set up an avatar. And the Window itself is resizeable very well - that was really annoying in 1.5.0.
The First start is much better!! Even beta6 has a great window which helps to set up accounts very easyly. That was really bad in the 1.x.x series.
And last but not least the prefences are better than the old ones. They are arranged more clearly... and there are even more features!
Well these are no killer features, but they just make Gaim2 more comfortable and easier.

Well, MEPIS is in RC2 status

Well, MEPIS 6.5 is in RC2 status now, I doubt Warren will replace programs at this stage unless is something important. But he might provide later on an upgrade in Synaptic (especially if GAIM 2.0 goes final).

Oh great news! I'll try RC2 in the next days!
But well GnuCash has been added in RC-status, too... just to mention it.
GAIM version is 2.0.0beta6

GAIM version is 2.0.0beta6 so it's not yet released. The current released (non-beta) version is 1.5.0
I compiled 2.0.0beta6 and I noticed some annoyances, for example: it goes to Away mode but it doesn't come back automatically even if I type stuff inside GAIM. This is not a complaint because that's expected with Beta products, I'm not sure though it should be included in MEPIS.
As long as there are non-beta alternatives that can provide same/similar functionality I think Warren should avoid introducing not fully tested programs into the final CD.
