MEPIS Podcast???

mmelbert's picture

While talking with Warren this evening we got on the subject of how to more effectively communicate with the community. We have been a bit lax, ok horrible, when it comes to this. Some of the reasons are that Warren is not the speediest of typists and I do not have as much time as I would like to be able to communicate the way that we want to. So after talking it over I think that we may try doing a podcast based on our infamous phone converstaions....ok maybe only infamous to Erin, emelbert, but somewhat infamous none-the-less. We may try to bring a little structure to what we will talk about. Some initial ideas will be a beginners tip, maybe some tips and tricks for slightly more advanced users, and of course banter about what has happened in the past week. We will attempt to make this a weekly podcast and I think that will depend on the reaction from the community. In the mean time if anyone has any ideas about format or even better a clue as to what to name our podcast it will be appreciated. Keep your eyes peeled for a podcast in the not so distant future!

That is great news! A topic

That is great news! A topic suggestion would be how to upgrade Mepis vis Synaptic. There are a lot of questions here and on mepislovers regarding errors in upgrading to the next beta. They are usually procedural issues.

As far as a name, Warren's Mepis Tips,(News), Simple Information for SimplyMepis, The Mepodcast.

What about "The week in the warren"?

Podcast

I think it would be a great idea... a podcast is a nice way to build a community feeling. Of course, it would have to be have a more or less fixed format, so people can at least have an idea as to what they can expect.

I would be in favour of dragging the community into this. e.g. a tips and tricks section could greatly be enhanced by instructive videos, think of Topcat's thing. Cooperating community members could work with you guys to create a Wink video or an xvidcap video to make the explanation visual.

Another idea could be to have a x-monthly podcast about the MEPIS roadmap. Unveil plans you might be having, or hot things you have seen in previews (KDE 4...) and how they could be incorporated into MEPIS.

Or, think of inviting an enthusiastic new community member to the podcast (from the Testimonial sections in mepis.org or mepislovers) and have them explain why they love mepis so much.....

I'll surely think of more.....

Good Idea

I think it's a good idea. We have to yank Warren out of that shell he's in. Here he's spending all his time working on code, improving Mepis, making our life a little better...

Hmm, maybe we shouldn't take him out of his shell Smiling

Actually, how's this for another (bad) name: Simply Warren.

Or for a self-recursive name:
MEPIS Educational Podcasts, and Informal Stuff

Jon

In /dev/null, no one can hear you type...

YouTube videos too!

How about YouTube videos to show off Mepis.
Like, how easy it is to install, while booted from the LiveCD..

Using apt-get to update software, the Mepis Utilities to repair a broken X configuration etc...

Podcasts are cool but a Mepis-YouTube video library of Mepis' video clips would be awesome.

Be great to see Warren and crew in action!

Eye-wink

Jon, you are seriously

Jon, you are seriously suffering from professional deformation. You find yourself in /dev/null and warren is ina shell (bin or bash??)... Methinks you need a serious ctrl-alt-backspace there Laughing out loud

infamous phone conversations

Yes, you could call your phone conversations "infamous." Of course, I could think of a few more words, such as "long", to call them.

I think the podcasts are a great idea.  It's about time you shared your phone calls with someone other than me.

fantastic Idea

I'm a big fan of linux podcasts. One that was Mepis related would surely be welcome. Sounds like your on the right track, but always make sure there is at least two hosts (single host podcasts can get old quickly). I'm looking forward to it.

Brilliant !!!

Really looking forward to it...

How would that be recorded?

Hi Matt;

But how would a phonecall be recorded as a Podcast?
I guess you wont be able to use your iPod Nano?

Update

Warren and I are still looking forward to getting our first podcast out there but we just have not had time yet. Also Warren has not been feeling well the past few days so that has also put a damper on things. I promise Warren and I will get to our podcast sometime soon. I am hoping that we will record it over the weekend at the latest.

We are still looking for ideas on a name...MEPIScast? Please submit any that you have and we will consider them.

This is great except

It gives us all a warm fuzzy knowing that you are telling us, the Mepis community, what is going on, but as I have been writing in my blog Microsoft has given us, that is to say the *nix community an opening, and no one seems to be running to get through it. Puzzled

Microsoft released Vista, Apple has been making fun of all the crap you have to deal with if you get it, and all of us in the *nix community are just sitting around watching. The release of Vista is an opportunity to get out to the corporate world and say hey, look at us, we can offer you more for less than Microsoft can, but the real issue is we do not have the money Microsoft has. So, in doing my part I have been writing on my blog about how corporate America needs to start looking at the alternatives, and have of course been backwardly promoting Mepis.

Any one interested can look me up at ITTOOLBOX, LinuxN00B, Lets get out there and fire up the world, the door is, if not open, at least unlocked, and all we need to do is turn the knob.

Warm Regards

Chris

Podcast #1

I ran across the MEPIS podcast #1 on distrowatch.com.
I listened to the mp3 file. Nice.

Suggestion: Just want to say that mmelbert's
voice was almost unintelligible. Sounded like he
was speaking through a pillow. Hopefully sound quality
will be improved in future podcasts.

P.S. If Warren is still having back pain, I may have a
suggestion for that. I am going through physical therapy
for chronic back pain (about 2 years worth) these several weeks.

Communication with Mepis community

My computer, running Mepis 6.0 crashed, so I am on my old machine that does not have Mepis. Just Windows 98SE and Internet Explorer. There is no longer the button "Forum" on Mepis home page, so I have lost the ability to contact the forum Mepis.org. I saw a link to Mepis Lovers so I tried to log on to that using my Mepis.org username and password. When that failed a few times without any message that I should re-register, I suggested that the way that forum was run (i.e. losing all passwords on transfer)was incompetent, the webmaster closed my account and cut me off!!!!

I am glad you think that the communication with users leaves a lot to be desired. That and the lack of comprehensive documentation is the primary reason why Linux will remain in obscurity, which is a great pity because it has limitless potential as a concept.

Alex - I think you're seriously out of line.

Apparently you found a way to get back here. After all a browser is all you need for that, in any OS.

First of all, it is rather silly to assume that providing a username + password from one forum would also give you immediate access to another Forum. Ranting towards the webmaster (and owner) of Mepislovers -without leaving a valid email-address- does not constitute rational behavior on your part. She tried several times to contact you.

Lack of comprehensive documentation? Man, you're something.
For a guy who had troubles locating www.mepis.org in a browser, you sure are transmitting a lot of bloated noise. Ever check the contents of the Wiki here?

Alex, do yourself and a lot of us a favor and stay away.

No regards,

Ko

I Really Don't Understand

Alex, I really don't understand what you are ranting about. What has any of what you mentioned have to do with Podcasts? You claim that you had difficulty reaching mepis.org from a Windows box. First, I'm sorry that your computer with Mepis on it crashed. Since you didn't give any info here, we can't help you with that problem. You can, if you want help, post a new thread and we'll see what we can do.

But the whole magic reason you could reach www.mepis.org from within the account on your Mepis box was because it is a bookmark in the browser. It is no different than any other bookmkark on any other browser on any other operating system. What makes you think that a Windows 98 box from last century would automatically have a bookmark to a website in the current century.

Next, mepislovers and mepis.org are two entirely different forums. If you have an account on MSN, do you expect to automatically have an account on apple.com? Once again, the responsibility for maintaining and keeping bookmarks, account names and passwords rests with you. Why is it automatically someone else's "fault" and "incompetence" when something happens with your equipment. That's the part I don't understand.

I have mentioned this before. Please be aware that there are a lot of people in mepis.org and mepislovers that can help, and are willing to help, but it is really hard to want to help when a person keeps claiming that we, and only we, are "incompetent".

I will make a deal with you. I will be willing to volunteer that I am "incompetent", but only if you meet me half way, and claim your own incompetence too.

No computer is magic, no operating system is magic, no website is magic. They all require human interaction, thought, and responsibility to work.

Alex.What is the real

Alex.

What is the real reason for your being here?

After nearly a year of whinging, it's pretty obvious that, what ever the reason happens to be, it has nothing to do with learning how to use Linux competently.

I'm gonna go to heaven, but I might be late...'cause I'm gonna live forever if the good die young.

I really don't understand

I think my skill would be more appropriately described as Ignorant, but I never claimed to be anything else, hence my posting in the "Newbies" part of the Mepis.org forum.

I am also a member of "ComputerInterestedTypes", a forum run by Microsoft (I think), which has separate forums for all kinds of operating systems, including Linux, Vista, Windows..etc., and one username and password gain access to all. I assumed that one username and password similarly gains access to all forums called "Mepis-whatever". So, when I tried to access MepisLovers I saw a notice, a kind of an apology, saying thing in "doing something" all passwords were lost and needed to be "re-activated", or words to that effect.

Having tried to re-claim my password about 4 times and in each case been told that I have given username, email or password that was not recognized, I lost my temper. I should have been given a clear notice "You are not a member of this Forum! Register or sod off!.. or words to that effect. Do you think that is a reasonable suggestion?

So, you are prepared to admit that you are incompetent. You will go a long way. I have always been prepared to admit that I was ignorant and most people responded with an offer of help. Perhaps I too will go some way!

I am a serious software user. So, when I try to OCR a document that is because I need to send it to the other side of the planet, not because I am testing the software or want to improve it (even if I could). GOCR did not reconize formating and OCRAD did not work at all unless I logged off and logged on again. But when I remarked that I resented having to to to Windows to OCR documents and that Arcsoft worked better and everytime, the response was as if I attacked a Religion .....whinger, archaic hardware, ranting, etc..

So, you think that other people running Mepis would help. I agree and I got a lot of help from Mepis.org forum.
Alex

Can somebody please close this thread!

Please?

Alex you are seriously out of line

Interesting response, Ko and that is why Microsoft have 97% of the business, or thereabouts.

I have already explained in my reply to Jon Du Quesne why I thought that one username and password would gain access to all Mepis forums. I was installing a new Pentium IV Athlon motherboard and CPU, but it would not go into BIOS and the monitor was blank. Only the CPU fan worked. I later learned that I was given a motherboard that was salvaged from another computer when the PSU failed!! I thought I was given a brand new board. So, until a new board arrives, I am using my old (1997)computer because that is all I have. Good job I did not throw it away. I have tried www.mepis.org/Forum but all I got was "Page not available"!! I have "found" it just now.

And I have given my valid email to the webmaster of MepisLovers. After 4 attempts to recover the password, I gave up and registered. I realised immediately that that was not the forum I was on before, but whilst I was there I posted a message to help another user on a matter I knew something about. Next time I tried to log on, I could not, because she got mortally wounded by my suggestion that losing the passwords was a little incompetent! What a tragedy! It was not her fault!!! You will never achieve World domination with people like that.

Alex

Alright, everybody's had

Alright, everybody's had their say.

This discussion has long lost its relevance to the blog entry. I am closing it for now.

This thread used to be about MEPIS Podcast, it was gravely derailed. I will lock it. (EDIT: I see that other mod had the same idea)

Alex, please ask for help about Mepislovers forum on their forum, also please don't hijack threads. Thanks.
