Kmail and two accounts
Posts: 123
I have been using kmail with two email accounts without any problems until two days ago. I get the same problem using mepis 6.5 on two machines and when using debian etch. (ie. kmail problem, not mepis). I do not have this problem using the evolution email client. I had not changed any settings since installation.
When I download email I only get email from one account. I also get a message "unable to complete list operation". I have been unable to find any info about this error. I have tried to reenter the account info and reinstall kmail. I thought it might be a kmail upgrade but one of the machines I tried has not been upgraded. I also thought it might be a corrupted file-but on three systems?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else to try or what happened in the first place?
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

I can't say that KMail has a problem with multiple accounts, as I'm hitting 16 email accounts with KMail, set up for interval checking every 15 minutes.
You might try toggling your pipelining usage, to see if that makes a difference; since some hosts can do it and some can't. You might also want to see if server certs or security protocols have changed.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.
The d%#@@ thing is working now.
I had both evolution and thunderbird working yesterday, so I thought it was a kmail problem. When I fired kmail up this morning at 4:30am to try your suggestions, it worked. Maybe time of day? charter not as busy? Maybe charter did something when I complained to them? I had originally thought it was their problem since it happened on three different systems. Maybe the weather? Who knows?
I suspect one of your suggestions would solve the problem.
I did increase the timeout after the successful download this morning just in case. Kmail does seem to respond slower than the other two mail clients. Maybe I shouldn't bother to check for viruses, but it is so much fun to tell my friends that they are infected!
Again, thanks for the help. If the problem returns I will try the other suggestions.
Don't you just love intermittent, well it worked yesterday, problems.

Thanks Jon, It's good to be back.
You know, it was a choice between the one above, and this one:

Since I quit smoking, I think I probably made the right choice.

Rich, I haven't used kmail for a little while now (still getting used to doing things on my Mac). When you are getting the "unable to complete..." message, is this happening with the same email account or does it vary? My immediate guess is that the connection to one of your email accounts is simply timing out. You may check some of the options on your side (in kmail) and see if you can lengthen the timeout period.
Another way that you can validate this and narrow down the search is to turn off access to each of the accounts one-at-a-time so that you are only receiving email from one, then the other, for a bit. See if the responses, and error messages if any, change.
