Welcome to the first MEPIS Podcast. Warren and I are pleased to bring you this long awaited event.
First let us apologize for this poor quality on this recording. We recorded at a lower data rate then what we wanted. But we should have this fixed for our next show. Warren sounds a bit raspy and I sound pretty muffled. Please bear with us on our first attempt.

Great stuff. Once you get the sound recording right it will be great to listen from time to time to news and discussions about further MEPIS developments.
Thanks.

Well, I've listened to Podcast I. I appreciate the outreach and I learned a bit. Thanks.
You folks mentioned the sound yourselves, so 'nuff said.
Great to be able to hear

Great to be able to hear what is happening and what is planned. Looking forward to hear the next one.
Congrats

Good idea! Good news! Good to know Warren's voice
Bad sound, unfortunately. For the next release, you shoud increase bitrate to 96kbps.
Keep up the good work, MEPIS is great.
Cheers

Awesome! Please keep it up!
Ogg instead of mp3 has better quality with a lower file size, and it is open source.

I agree about ogg, but...

Windows users will be listening in too and by default, windows does not have support for ogg files. All is not lost though because a windows user can download the oggcodecs package from here which will at least enable the horrible wmp to play the file.
There is unfortunately one down side though, that using ogg may give the impression to some that linux is like a mac, great in principle, but too far removed from the masses to be worth considering.

So the solution is not to completely ignore or give up on Mepis, Linux, or Ogg.
It is possible to make Ogg (Mepis) available in addition to to mp3 (MSWindows), and people can and will switch to it when they try it and find it is superior. Most listeners to this podcast will likely be Mepis users anyway.
to fix the audio

The human ear can hear from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and, by the Nyquist theorem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist_theorem you need to sample at least 2*20kHz = 40 kHz. Most typical is 44kHz. Higher bitrate gives higher frequencies and a crisper sound. If not going to encode 44kHz (it is now at 16 kHz) the input must be low pass filtered with a cut-off frequency of 16kHz /2 = 8 kHz before being encoded or aliasing will occur and it will garble the sound.
Transcript?

I know it adds significantly to the work, but a transcript would be nice for the hearing impaired.

I think the transcript is a great idea. I had been tossing it around in my head for a little while as well. I think the transcript is a perfect opportunity for people in the community who is looking to contribute to step in. We could put it on the wiki. After that then it could even be translated. May be a bit ambitious...but doable if we get some volunteers. Each person take a 10 minute segment and then just put it all together. I will try and remember and make a call for volunteers in the next show....unless we get some more before then. I just know that Warren and I do not have time to sit and do the actual transcription.
Ogg Support in Windows

There is a lot of support for Ogg Vorbis format under Windows. I used ogg (and FLAC) under Windows long before I switched to MEPIS years ago. There are DirectShow filters for those who must use Windows Media Player. Also many players (like the ever popular WinAMP) support ogg natively. Ogg Vorbis is not only free, open source, it's patent free, too.

For a podcast, it probably doesn't matter too much, mp3 vs. ogg, i.e. quality; dynamic range: voice vs. music
MEPIS Talks

Finally had a chance to listen, enjoyed it a lot.
As for name: I am hurt and disappointed, of course, that my original suggestion (A Week in the Warren) was dissed, but now am trying a comeback with a serious and simple suggestion: "MEPIS Talks"
The pun between meaning "MEPIS developers talk" and "talks about MEPIS" is maybe just enough to make it intriguing without being offputting? (Huh?!)
Very enjoyable!

Hi,
Although I don't use Mepis full time (I have Fedora and Ubuntu) I found this podcast very interesting.
It's the only one so far (I think) which is done by the actual guys who make the distro. Yes, the sound quality was bad, but I didn't mind that. I could still make out what you were saying and that's the important thing.
Anyway, if your goal with this podcast was to get users of other Distros interested in Mepis it worked - I'm listening!
Also, thanks for making it available in MP3 - I have a Creative MuVo that won't play oggs, and it is my preferred method of listening to podcasts. (Though I am always looking out for good flash based ogg players - my gp2x is too big!)
Thanks again Warren, good luck for future episodes!
The death of Ogg will be due

The death of Ogg will be due to a lack of Ogg support from the major portable music players. I'm not sure about the infamous iPod, but I went window shopping the other day and 0/6 players claimed Ogg support. The one I've got is a Sorell (you ever hear of that before? I haven't!), which is a good unit with FM reception, a microphone for voice recording, and of course ogg/mp3/wma support.

MP3 patent expiration will

MP3 patent expiration will be the death of Ogg... it's not far away, they need to prepare for final rite.
I've heard that Ogg is a better format and offers better quality, even so I don't think it will be able to fight MP3 domination unless Apple or other relevant company adopts it.

An extensive list of portable ogg players can be found here.

I have the Cowon iAudio U3. In my opinion, there is little that could be done to it to make it more perfect.
Ogg has significantly better quality than Mp3. In the long run, FLAC, not Ogg or Mp3, will be the default codec as storage space increases.
Nice!

Thanks for the podcast. And even if you bring out an OGG feed, I for one would appreciate if you would keep an mp3 feed, because I listen to podcasts by loading them on my ipod, which doesn't support ogg.
Like everybody else, I'd like better sound quality and...
more podcast episodes!
Thanks again.

Thanks guys........
