I am lost! What is all this stuff y'all are so excited about?

I don't have a nvidia card I don't play video games and I don't know what xorg is and if I should install it. Can I, or should I bother to upgrade to 6.5? It is such a bloody nuisance. I seem to be panicking abut all this.

I tried today to install xorg and it is obsessed with gnucash, which I think is a quicken clone, about checkbooks. In other words, it wants to delete about 10 things, install 10 things and update about 10 things. I don't use gnucash. Oh, I have dialup only.

I have a Dell Dimension 2300, 4 years old. I have Mepis 6.0 upgraded to Mepis 6.1 running without problems.

So dear Mepislovers, should I do anything or just ignore all this stuff. I usually like to have what's new but all this stuff is overwhelming. I think beryl won't work and isn't it just 3d graphic stuff anyway?

One last question which I have asked before and still don't understand, what is the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit and which should I use?

Thanks for any enlightenment y'all may have.

Your computer won't do

Your computer won't do 64-bit. You can read more info about 64 bit computing on Wikipedia: ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit
Basically it's another computer architecture.

As for upgrading to SimplyMEPIS 6.5 it a personal choice, if 6.0 works fine for you you don't have many reasons to upgrade to 6.5 especially that Beryl would work for you. You can try of course the disk when 6.5 will be released and if you see anything that's worth upgrading you can do that. Nobody forces you to upgrade anything, you can continue to use 6.0.

Some Answers

If your system serves you well there is no driving reason to risk borking your system with these updates. Xorg is the xwindows system and you already have it you dont need to install it again or worry about Beryl , it sounds like your rig wont work with it anyway. Especially on dialup i wouldnt play with my every day used system. Now if you have the drive space and a video card that will work with the new eye candy install rc1- or 2 and go for it who knows you might like it but it sounds like from your post you dont need it.

If you dont use gnucash why install it? When many packages are being removed that might have adverse effects on what you have and use. Im thinking it better to lay back and let someone with a fast connection take the risks then if all works well by all means upgrade. So the basic answer to your question is ignore the updates till the dust clears unless the package refers to security.

As to 32 bit and 64 bit it basically refers to single core and dual core processors or SMP type chips. Dont take this as the end all answer either , google is your friend anything youre not sure about can be found by starting a search with, linux 64bit for example to get an in-depth explanation.

Sorry Jim, but that's not correct. The number of cores has no relation whatsoever with 32/64 bit architecture. It's true that most of the dual core processors can do 64 bit computing too, but that's only incidental.
