SimplyMEPIS or simply MEPIS

One can't help but notice that 90+% of the time MEPIS is referred to in just that way, MEPIS, including on the home page of our website and on this forum where it says, "MEPIS an OS for the 21st Century". Further down on the same home page it says, "Why SimplyMEPIS Linux?" and further down still it says, "Try SimplyMEPIS today!" and immediately below that it says, "Click here to purchase MEPIS or click here to download MEPIS."

I note that Warren Woodford consistently says SimplyMEPIS in his posts to the home page and elsewhere.

My questions are basically two I guess.

1- Is SimplyMEPIS so named because it is just one part or version of MEPIS? If so, is there a more complex or possibly more sophisticated version of MEPIS?

2- In any event, why do we not simply call the distro MEPIS? And, if there is some level above MEPIS, name that one with some sort of modifier?

I've tried to find an explanation for the Simply in the name, but all I'm able to find is an explanation of how the word MEPIS was decided on.

SimplyMEPIS seems unnecessarily complex to me, and apparently to most, judging from the nearly exclusive use of MEPIS in talking about this wonderful distro.

I'm interested in any and all information as well as personal opinion on this. TIA

I have the same opinion. I proposed dropping the "Simply" part to Warren and I'm sure he will consider that option.

Historically there were Pro, Lite, and Simply products of MEPIS. I'm not sure if there are any plans for those, but I think for main product should be called "MEPIS" in any case, maybe it has a different name to differentiate between MEPIS company and SimplyMEPIS product, but as you mentioned that conveys the image of complicated instead of "simple".

Besides, I am against calling MEPIS "simple" or "simply" because that conveys the image of OS mostly for beginners when in reality MEPIS can be used by advanced Linux users without any annoyances that usually "simple" distros come with.

Further arguement against SimplyEPIS name

I agree that the Simply designation makes MEPIS sound dumbed down and MEPIS users appear to be simple minded.

A further arguement against the use of Simply in the name hit hard the last couple of days when searching around the internet for information on our favorite distro; that is, that sometimes the information is listed under SimplyMEPIS and other times/places it is listed under MEPIS. This makes information harder to find and leads to problems in compiling data on things like installed base, usage, etc. This sort of thing is inevitable I think, when even on our home page we refer to our OS as SimplyMEPIS in some places and MEPIS in others. If some of us list SimplyMEPIS and others list MEPIS as our installed distribution this is bound to create anomilies in databases.

I see many disadvantages and no advantages to using Simply in our name.

I'm unemployed you insensitive clod!

Actually, the marketing research team hired to come up with new branding of Mepis products uses the "Microsoft Market" tool. It of course, detects any non-Microsoft references in company or product names, and makes appropriate "adjustments".

That marketing team has, in fact, been sacked.

A song

Didn't I see somewhere that the name was derived from Memphis? Makes me think maybe we need a country theme song:

*twang twang*

Woke up this morning, turned on my box,
Booted to MEPIS, pulled on my socks,
Made me some coffee, and shot at the fox.

Chorus:
Grub in the morning, ah what a treat!
Scratchin' the armpits, smelling the feet.

[I could go on...]
