distrowatch ratings of mepis

Distrowatch ratings of mepis are not real.Mepis is a great operating system which is better than pc linux os which is rated higher.I've been a user of mepis and don't have any problems.I have used it on many different operating systems-with no problems.Whoever does the ratings on distrowatch-DOES not know what is going on-in linux world.Getting back to pc linuxos-the newest release has been nothing but trouble for me-I have tried it on amd and intel-nothing but trouble.Display on boot up is crappy on both computers.John
P.S. Mepis keep up the good work. Thanks john

I wouldn't call it a drop in popularity just because of place swaps in the hit per day rankings.
Here's another perspective (Hits per day are increasing, not dropping):
http://www.distrowatch.com Hits Per Day for SimplyMEPIS (as of when looking at the hit counts there when typing this post):
Year 2006....... 1045
Last 12 months.. 1119
Last 6 months... 1172
Last 3 months... 1356
Last 30 days.... 1483
It's down a bit for the last 7 Days (but, that could be true of the other distros, too -- just because of the weekend, etc.

lies, damn lies and statistics

all right, it's not original.
golden45 is quite right that there is no relationship between distrowatch hits, actual popularity or bug-free nature.
there just aren't any other sort of quickly updated figures on the net.
The owner of distrowatch also makes other stats available, and they also have to carefully considered as to usefulness.
For example, number of releases of a distro in a particular time has been put forward as a measure of how active the developers are, but it could just as well be a measure of how careless the developers are, making mistakes that require regular bug-fixes.
The owner is also forthright in his opinions - just like I am with mine

Distrowatch is extremely scewed

I think a much better approach to seeing how well a distro is doing is to see what kind of traffic the site is getting.
This first graph show that alexa doesnt even show PCLinuxOS as a blip in the one year graph between MEPIS and PCLinuxOS.
This next graph show the one year for MEPIS, Debian, OpenSuse, redhat.com (since you can't narrow down fedora.redhat.com), and Ubuntu.
As you can see we still have a long way to go...but we are holding our own. Also some surprises is that debian seems to still be on top. You would never get that feeling from distrowatch. So dont be a sheep and think that what distrowatch is showing is even close to accurate. Do some research and make you own decesions.

Thanks Matt

Hi,
Thanks for providing that source of info.
Indeed:
Mepis Traffic Rank is somewhere at 55.000
PCLinuxos Traffic Rank is somewhere around 6.600.000
Mepis qualified consistently in the Top-100.000 Ranks.
Lots of interesting info on Alexa

Not to forget that Mepislovers probably gets a big part of MEPIS traffic, as it looks it gets more forum traffic than mepis.org

Mepislovers.org ranks at 635.000. (according to this Alexa.com statistic)
You need to set the time period to one year to get some data, as Mepislovers.org does currently not rank in the Top-100.000 sites). By their own admission these statistics can be highly biased for lower traffic sites that are outside of these 100.000 topranking. And it's all based on users using (or not) the Alexa Toolbar (plugin/extension).
It's just another source; not necessarily better (more accurate) than the Distrowatch rankings - in my opinion.

You can even compare mepislovers.org and mepis.org.
Just add mepis.org at the bottom at "Compare Sites"

DistroWatch ratings are

DistroWatch ratings are merely counts of how many times a specific distribution listing page has been viewed on DW itself.
As such, the DW ratings may be reflective of how popular a specific page happens to be on the DW website.
In spite of the obvious good intentions, any other interpretation of the DW ratings are wishful thinking at best.
