recommend multifunction laser printer

I'm looking for a multi function laser printer/fax/scanner/copier that "just works". Anyone have a recommendation? I'm running 6.0, expecting to upgrade to 6.5.

I've scoured the forums and the closest I came to something definitive was a message from james a. thompson on 1/17/05 citing a posting by mmelbert at http://www.mepis.org/node/view/4425. Unfortunately that links to a blamk page.

any thoughts on how i can find mmelbert's post...or more recent experiences?

Basically, your best bet would be an HP

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Second the HP

HP is your best bet. I'd look at one of the PSC type models. I'm using an older PSC-1400 that works great for scanning and printing. It's an inkjet versus laser. But, if there is a good driver for it in the distro, that part shouldn't make any difference as far as whether it will work or not.

Look under System Settings>Peripherals>Printers and use the add printer wizard, pick any printer found on your system (you're not really going to install it), and when you get to the screen that shows manufacturers, select HP. Then, scroll through the list of printers you see and you'll know which ones have drivers in the distro.

Note that Warren has the latest version of HPLIP and drivers in 6.5 (it will have more choices). So, most newer HP models should be supported. SimplyMEPIS also has the HP Printer toolbox utilities in it. So, you can do things like clean nozzles, align print heads, check ink levels, etc.

If you find a specific model you like, ask about it in this thread and I'll check the list of printer drivers in 6.5 to make sure it's there.

There is a quirk when installing an HP printer. You have to select the "second" printer found when installing one. See this thread for details:

If nothing else, serving as a dire warning to others is not a bad thing to be.

thanks to all

I really appreciate the input. I have done a little on line window shopping and I think the HP Laserjet 3050 is what I'm looking for.

As Jim suggested I checked the "add printer" process and there's a cups driver for this model.

thanks again to each of you who responded.
