Scanner loses printer

Installed Mepis 6.0 and done all upgrades
My printer is Brother HL-1430 USB and scanner is HP Scanjet 3400C USB.
Both work fine (although scanner seems to be bit slow) separately but if I first use scanner then the printer stops working.
The print manager says "processing", but nothing happens. Sometimes even reboot won't help. Then I have to reinstall printer.
Any ideas for this?

Don't know if this will help but you can keep an eye on the printer dialog box and make sure your printer is listed in the drop-down box after scanning. Also go to print manager & click admin mode box at bottom and give it root password then at top on printer select set as user or local default if you haven't already done so. Maybe that will make it a little more permanent. Worth a try i think, its an unusual problem don't think i have seen it posted before. Who knows may be a new wrinkle.
