Radeon 9250 (Pleaaase Help)

Hi everyone,

I have a problem that is really, sincerely, absolutely, positively frustrating me to wits end.
I've been trying all sorts of things on my own to get this (PCI) ati radeon 9250 to work with Mepis 6.0.1.
To start, I can't seem to get Mepis to load using the PCI function in bios for the video card; it gets to the
boot screen and then goes to a bunch of (acpi this, and irq that type of stuff) and then just freezes up with a bunch of hex symbols. Once I change the bios settings to use the (onboard) option for video all is well and it boots quickly and without any problems. My main concern now is getting the card that I covet so much to work on linux (Mepis). If you guys have any suggestions pleeeeaaaaase reply. I just don't know what to do anymore, and if I continue on my own I'm afraid that I may screw up some things as it took me nearly a year to figure out how to install Mepis on my system again onced it crashed using windows and I never tried any other distro, steadfast to Mepis. Also, I've read many, many, endless forums of people who has gotten there ati radeon 9250 to work with mepis and had no problems, but of course these posts in the forums are anywhere from a year to 3 years old, so I don't think I would be getting to much help from those who've successfully installed the card. This is my only wish, could someone please make it come true (from the make-a-wish foundation of PC's)?? I have also googled and googled to my heart just couldn't take no more, so i'm very savvy of doing research before asking. I might have missed a few things though (always leave room for error).

Also, if I can't boot using the PCI function of bios, how is it that I could get anything or solely my graphics card to work using PCI without locking my PC up at boot using Mepis??? Sorry for being such a newb, but I have to start somewhere.

Sounds like

Sounds like you tried just about everything. Just so I understand do you mean__ it won't boot from the live cd? Or do you already have it installed? I have a 9250 with beta7 on it and all is well except beryl. Which I know can be done cause its been on there before. Even before beryl was beryl. Have you tried choosing the "vesa" option at the grub menu? Or any of the other options.

Can you remove the card that came with the motherboard?

As to the question in your other post, it is very unlikely that it makes any difference to the drivers which type of slot your card is using ... I have used the NVidia drivers with PCI cards with no problem ... I have never had occasion to use ATI drivers with anything but a laptopthat came with integrated ATI video

My sound card is onboard, and I have a PCI sound card ... I think disabling the onboard sound in BIOS eliminated any conflicts ...

Installed

I've installed Mepis already, although I don't know if I installed it in the correct manner to have the programs work as they should. I installed the OS after many unsuccessful attempts in the following fashion after visiting a forum on the topic of "Can't boot from Live CD mepis" :
1. insert live cd, 2. boot using the "minimal" option with the number "2" at the end of the command-line, 3. once at the command line screen after booting type "xinit" to bring up semi-GUI with a command-line interface only e.g. (shell), 4. login and pass for root access, 5. type "minstall".

Since then Mepis automatically boots up with the parameters: "root = /dev/hdb1 nomce quiet vga=normal acpi=off apm=power_off noacpi". ****After I had tried to unsuccessfully install the ATI drivers from the official ATI site I've found out that I could boot the live CD using those same parameters; after having to reinstall xconfig to rid myself of the black screen of death. It dawned on me to try and use the ones from a (I guess) somewhat successful boot up, that had saved me from having to reinstall the whole OS again****

I haven't tried the "Vesa" option yet, but I will as soon as I'm finished here.

Thanks a lot for the reply and suggestions guys.

P.S. It's onboard video so I can't remove it, but I reeeeeally wish I could because I want my 9250 to work so badly, and I'm tired of windows and I'm ready to start my next chapter of life (Full fledge Mepis with 9250 support)so that I can get on to other aspects of the OS without having to switch back and forth (dual booting)!

tried vesa

I've tried the Vesa option and it doesn't work. If someone has successfully installed the (PCI) radeon 9250 256MB card please give me a heads up on what process I should go through in order to get mines to work. I've even tried freeBSD because I heard it would work "out of the box" with just about all hardware, but it doesn't work for me (go figure). Maybe this stuff just isn't cut out for me. I'm almost at wit's end with doing research to correct the problem, but I hope someone could shed some light on the subject for me before I just give up completely.

I have that card... and it

I have that card... and it worked... honestly (I got 3D acceleration I think both with ATI and radeon drivers).

However, it stopped working and I don't know if something broke or it's newer version that don't work with it (don't even know which one worked, maybe 3.3) I suspect that something went wrong with the card because it doesn't work in others distros either. It does work in Vesa mode, but no more 3D I just get a blank screen if I try either official ATI or Xorg radeon drivers...

(BTW, this one is an AGP card)

Should I buy this?

I see conflicting information about this card. Does is work well with Beryl for 3D?

Thanks

NVidia card will be much easier in Linux

Welcome to Mepis!

Won't your motherboard take a PCIe or AGP card?

You don't need much to get Beryl working -- I have 2 older NVidia cards, one has 128 MB and one has only 64 MB, they are easy to get working in Linux and Beryl works

ATI cards are not as easy to get working in Linux and only the radeon driver works with Beryl, the ATI proprietary driver will not work with Beryl.

It's a good idea to start a new topic when you post a new question in the forum.

This Sounds alot like the problem I was having with my Radeon 9250 PCI, nothing would work at all . . . I recently tried the newer version of Mepis though, and it booted to where it would just leave me at a command line, if I would run 'startx' I would get an error that no screens were found

So, I google'd for a bit and came up with that changing the driver to 'ati' in xorg.conf by running

'sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf'

And changing the PCI to 1:2:0 then it works great, everything loads OK and I could even use beryl without any configuration at all.
