no sound in firefox when going from 6.0 to 6.5rc3

i did a fresh install of 6.5rc3 on 3-28-07. after tweaking with it for several hours, i got everything to work beautifully EXCEPT i get no sound in Firefox. i noticed when i used Mepis 6.0 the Firefox version was 1.5 but in Mepis 6.5 it is 2.0. i don't know if that small difference caused the sound to not work but I've tried at least a dozen different tricks to get it working and, no go.
if anyone has a sureFIRE way of getting sound it would be greatly appreciated by me and mine.
I'm not a total noob, i've been using Linux for about 6 month.
I'm using an old sound blaster card from the late 90s, i know, I'm a cheepo but it works for what i need, or at least it did untill 6.5.
thanx in advance for everyones reply
Mepis ROCKS!!!!

Try it with moving your plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

thanx for the input

i downloaded the final 6.5 and installed it. again everything is flawless except my firefox problem. i try to watch videos and get the visual but zero sound. then i try to listen to music or sound clips from various sites, myspace, band web sites, still no sound. i tried carlops and yamal's suggestions and still no sound. i noticed though in yamal's suggestion when i copied plugins from usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins
that the mozilla folder only had two plugins and the firefox had about 12-15. when i get home i'll post all the plugins names here and maybe an answer can be reached.
ironicly i installed IE6 using tatanka and it works without a hitch, i get video and audio. does this make since?
any way, thanx to all and i'll keep pluging at it untill i get a resolution and then i'll post my actions on how i fixed it.

Think I understand. Flash plugin uses a different audio channel.
Open a console and type 'alsamixer'. Raise all volume levels for output channels while playing a video. That should do it.
To save alsa settings:
- su
- alsactl store

tried alsamixer without success

thank you carlops for all your help. i used the alsamixer as you sugested. i raised all the sliders to the top and i still heard nothing from firefox, i did however hear extra noise when i raised the microphone into the red, which is expected. i just don't understand why i CAN get sound through mplayer and the other aplications and using IE6 but firefox wont give me sound. could it have something to do with the kernel? I don't know just throwing out stray ideas to hopefully jar someones mind into a new direction to fix this. i love 6.5 with all it's eye candy but my kids could care less if they can't play flash games with sound.
thanx again carlops

In that case, right click

In that case, right click the kmix (speaker) icon > show mixer window and activate input and out channels by clicking on the green 'lights'.
Since you have sound, I am 100% sure that it is a matter of unmuting some channel or other. Just a matter of trying...
If nothing works, try starting firefox from the command line with 'aoss firefox'. But I doubt if that does the trick, must be some channel.

still no sound

I right clicked the kmix icon and activated all the green lights.
still no sound in firefox but IE6 worked flawlessly, but i've gotton so used to firefox i refuse to use anything else for cassual browsing.
any who, then I tried starting firefox from the command line with aoss firefox. it gave me a blank page and i couldn't go anywhere or do anything so i had to restart xserver to close the window.
this is really getting agrivating, i think i'll just go back to what i know works and do a fresh install of Mepis 6.0. I'll miss beryl though, we became such good friend. parting is such sweet sorrow.
thank you carlops for all your help.
i might have to just upgrade to a new sound card with next years tax check.

A new sound card: you can pick up a soundblaster card on ebay for a couple of bucks....
And a tip: if you have an unresponsive app, use ctr-alt-esc, which will give you a scull-and-crossbones mousepointer. Click on the window and it's zapped into /dev/null

further development

I reinstalled 6.0 on a separate partition then did an incremental distro upgrade. I lost sound in firebox somewhere between adding automatix2 and upgrading the Linux kernel. If this helps anyone with how to resolve this issue, that would be awesome. Until then I’ll keep using ie4linux to watch videos, I don't like it but you have to do what you have to do right?

another fresh install 5-17-07
Posts: 10
i wiped out the hard drive completely and started with a totally fresh install of 6.5 final. again everything installed and ran flawlessly except sound in firefox:? i can listen to MP3s, play games and after installing IE4linux got sound there, but none in firefox:( this has been a real agrivation. i have one option left and that's getting another sound card, but I don't see where that would really make a difference.
thanxs to everyones help.

It's probably the codecs

It's probably your codecs.
I can recall seeing this issue with my PC a few times (video with no audio), even with w32codecs installed, and changing the codecs being used with mplayer to an older version solved it for me.
Try enabling the extra repository in Synaptic you'll see under Settings, Repositories (making sure to press the Reload Button afterwards). Then, search for w32codecs and reinstall them.
These codecs seem to work OK for me using 6.5 Final. But, I remember needing to go back to a different set of codecs to get both video and audio at one point during the development cycle.
You may want to try these if that doesn't solve it:

If that still doesn't solve it, see the last post in this thread on changing one of the mplayer config files.

still no sound, maybe mepis 6.0 again with beryl?
I'm at a loss. still no sound in firefox or any of the other linux web browsers. only IE4linux gives me sound but the video shutters and skips.
has anyone successfully got beryl to work on mepis 6.0? if so could you give me a step by step procedure on how to accomplish this? everything including sound worked in mepis 6.0
thanx for everyones help.

what do you mean, no sound
Posts: 2299
what do you mean, no sound in Firefox? In the plugins?
mplayer allows a right click in the player window to choose a different audio system. Try alsa instead of oss, or oss instead of alsa.
Also, try starting ff from the command line with the command 'aoss firefox' (no quotes).
Let us know what happens
