cdrom/dvd problem
Posts: 86
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a block device (maybe try `-o loop'?)
This is the message I get when I try to mount my cdrom/dvd device. .. .
what could be the problem?

In that case you have the same problem that I have. I actually noticed it first after updating my 6.0 to 6.01. The next 6.x betas still had the problem.
I fixed it some time ago, but the fix is not 100%.
Since I am currently not at home, I do not have access to my desktop machine (with the CDROM+DVDWriter). I'll be home on Monday next and then during the day post the method I used to fix the problem.
I don't have the problem with the single combodrive in my laptop. That works as it should in Mepis 6.5 RC.

workaround

I have received a quite technical explanation from warren, which basically boils down to the fact that the dapper codebase has a couple of bugs that cannot be completely ironed out, due to intricate dependencies between components.
The two drives should be recognized, but their names can be swapped (cdrom and cdrom1).
The workaround would be to create a second icon on the desktop, that points to 'the other device'. If you want to mount a dvd and icon1 does not let you mount it, you should try the other link.
Let us know if this helps.

I created a hardware link to a CDWRITER Device on my desktop. This allowed me to mount the CD/DVD Desktop Icon. But also this new Hardware Link to this CDWRITER Device created another
hardware link for a Floppy Drive. . . Floppy is already on my Desktop. I have only one floppy disk drive on my system. ..

This hardware link did allow me to access files on my CD/DVD (Cdrom ) Device Drive.
I've got this problem too

Finally got a round to upgrading so SM32 6.5 and now I've got this problem. Now for the noobie question. How do I make a hardware link? I couldn't find it in the wiki, unless I missed it somewhere.
I've got this same prob but

Hi,
Which Mepis version?
Normally (latest versions) you just put a CD/DVD in the tray, close it; wait some seconds then right-hand click on the CD/DVD icon on the desktop. You can mount -and safely remove- it there.
Do you have one or two optical drives?
With one drive the above approach normally works.
