Ive just installed the latest Mepis 6.5 and wanted to try out the Beryl 3D desktop. As I have a Nvidia Geforce 4 MX400 graphics card, I installed the Nvidia Legacy driver after the install but when I select the 3D session at login the desktop just looks pretty normal, no Cube and just a bit of ghosting. What do I do to get the 3D effects?

Can anyone tell me whats

Can anyone tell me whats wrong? Is it my graphics card thats to old?

mouse wheel

spin your mouse wheel with your cursor on your desktop(not over an open window) that should let you know if its working.

I did that and yes the

I did that and yes the desktop moves but it doesn't look like a cube as it covers the full screen. Also I have 4 desktops and just to see if its rolling through all the desktops, I put a different wallpaper on each one. rolling the mouse wheel would flip the current desktop but the wallpaper stayed the same which means its just showing one desktop.

is there something i need to do?

desktop and cube

Beryl is still in its 0.2 stage, so some things are lacking. One of those is proper integration of the kde desktops and the cube sides.

In Beryl settings manager you can specify how many sides the cube will have (if it has 5, it will be a pentacube Eye-wink

When the cube spins, you see the different sides of the cube. For each desktop in KDE, you will have a different cube. So, if you have 4 desktops and a 4 sided cube, you will basically have 16 workspaces.

In system > more applications you find the Beryl settings manager. There you can set all kinds of preferences for window effects etc.

To view the cube in all its glory, hold the left ctrl-alt keys and click and drag with the mouse on the desktop. You will then see how the cube moves.

Poke around in the settings manager. It takes some getting used to.

Also, be aware of a bug in the nvidia driver. You probably have a card with 64 MB of memory. With a lot of apps open at the same time, you can suddenly get black windows. This is due to a memory management bug that hopefully will be solved in a next release

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Nvidia Graphics Card

I know this is a little late, but I've just read about the Nvidia MX400 and Beryl problem. I also have MX400 and have had problems geting Beryl to work. I have tried Kubuntu Dapper and Fiesty, and it works fine on Fiesty but not on Dapper and I have had the same problems with Mepis. So I would conclude it has somthing to do with software.
I had a better outcome when I upgraded Mepis first then rebooted and installed the Nvidia drivers, still not 100% I've been tempted to try Easyubuntu to install Drivers.
Has anyone done this?
