Intel 536ep modem IS working under Mepis 6.5!

Good news: Have now got the Intel 536ep modem working under both Mepis 6.0 with intel536ep-modules-2.6.15-26-386 and Mepis 6.5 with intel536ep-modules-2.6.15-27-desktop. Previous problem was caused by not inserting the module Intel536.ko (note case of 'I') into the kernel properly. Ran # insmod -f Intel536.ko from the directory /lib/modules/2.6.15-27-desktop/misc and it's working fine now, with /dev/modem finding itself automatically.
Been here already with Mepis 6.0 and new kernel

Under Mepis 6.5-32, using basic kernel 2.6.15-27-desktop, lspci correctly identifies the Intel 536EP Data Fax Modem card. But /dev/modem never gets assigned and no modem can be found (or it's "busy") on the other possible devices (querying using KPPP).
Did that before

Didn't realize you were talking about a Fax Modem--my bad. Looking around, see lots of people complaining about it, though this thread (near bottom) looks promising:

Things have be better in future... Mepis offer more functionality in Linux world, but is easy, simply to use- It`s Simply Mepis!
Mepis 6.5 CD not have kernel source on CD or precompiled Intel536EP modem driver.Not all users in world have DSL on hands , remember that! Solution is next: install older 2.6.15-26 kernel from Mepis 6.0 DVD and modem driver for this kernel, connect to internet and download via Synaptic Intel536EP modem driver for kernel 2.6.15-27-desktop, disconnect and remove kernel ....-26.Repair installation via
Mepis Assistant on next boot.
Please , consider to submit package modem driver for Intel536EP for kernel 2.6.15-27-desktop on CD in future.You have enough place to do this.
