What's the point of the CD/DVD desktop icon?

I'm not actually sure what the point of the CD/DVD icon on the 6.5 desktop is. I and many other users (judging from forum posts) first think they should click on it to start a disk, which produces an error message that the device can not be mounted. And right-clicking on it to select "Open" does the same thing.
Is it there just to eject the disk?
Thanks, but

I think it might be more complicated than that:

Carlops workaround there worked for me and others. There are at least three other threads on similar 6.5 cd/dvd problems on that forum, so my guess is that it is possibly more systematic.

The other threads relate to problems with multiple opt. drives

I think that problems with a combodrive (mine works perfect in 6.5) are different from the problems reported with multiple drives.

Yeah, I see that, thanks.

But it is interesting--and possibly diagnostic--that the same solution more or less clears up the problem.
Being basically a hacker in this area, I am at the moment just looking for any solution that works. And since not all the posts are about multiple drive problems, it is comforting that I am not just forgetting to put in a CD or something stooopidddd like that. ;-D
CD/DVD icon on the 6.5 desktop

I noticed that my single dvd-rw/ram drive did not mount a cdrom or dvd-r disc correctly, giving me the error that there is no know filesystem available.
I made the change suggested to move the fstab lines referencing the /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrom1 to the static portion of the fstab file and rebooted. Still no joy. Then I changed the properties of the desktop icon to point to /dev/cdrom1 INSTEAD of /dev/cdrom and voila! IT WORKED!
After I rebooted, it stopped working. I changed the CD/DVD icon to point back to /dev/cdrom and it works!?!
My question, is with a single cd/dvd-rw drive, why do I have two lines in fstab /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrom1? Furthermore, why is one used and then the other after reboots? Any ideas.
This is one a fresh install with no other software installed and no updates (if any) applied. I am using Mepis 6.5 Final and my cd/dvd-rw drive is connected as master to the secondary IDE port, jumpered correctly and is the only device on the IDE port. My hard drive is master on the primary IDE port and is the only device attached there.

If you have two lines, you can easily remove one. I don't know where the two lines came from, but they will surely confuse udev when media is inserted.
MAke a copy of fstab and remove one line. Them reboot and see if it works.
BTW: I think you can delete the dvd icon from the desktop, and configure the desktop to show unmounted and mounted CD and DVDs

Thanks. I edited the fstab file and commentted out the second line referencing the /dev/cdrom1 and the desktop icon now only points to /dev/cdrom and it works after reboots. I also kept the /dev/cdrom line in the static section of the fstab file. Thanks.
Put a disk in first......:-)

Hi,
You need to put a disk in first before doing anything with the desktop icon. Wait a few seconds. Right-click the icon and you can mount, browse, open, unmount and eject the disk.
