Correct kernel AMD X2
I recently installed 6.5 rc3 on an MSI K9N6GM-V motherboard with AMD X2 3800+ processor. I checked the wiki which suggests the 2.6.15-27-k7 kernel for SMP for AMD processors. In looking for that in synaptic I also found the 2.6.15-27-desktop-smp kernel labeled as being for Intel and AMD. My question is which should be used? Is there any downside to using the 2.6.15-27-desktop-smp kernel?
I'm a little bit wary of the k7 kernel since a 6.0 install on the same computer got very unstable after I installed that kernel.
I would greatly appreciate any advice and insight on this. thanks

I think both should work
I think both should work fine, you can install both and boot couple of times using them to see which one seems to perform better, if you want you can use a benchmark program (e.g. unixbench) to see if you get better number with one of them...

Thanks. I'll try 'em both.
Thanks. I'll try 'em both.

Actually there may be a downside to the desktop-smp kernel, at least on my computer. When I installed it, along with everything I could find in the repos labeled desktop-smp, I hit a bunch of problems. some are minor annoyances like hyper-sensitive keyboard repeat. Others like losing sound and freezing completely in synaptic are potential show-stoppers.
This computer is an MSI K9N6GM-V GF6100 with an AMD X@ 3800+ processor and two gig of ram. I installed the K7 smp kernel on the same computer in an earlier Mepis 6.0 install and it had almost the same problems only far worse so I'm a bit concerned over trying that route.
Any idea what the problem is or how to fix it? Any advice and assistance would be really appreciated. thanks
Thanks for the suggestion. I
Thanks for the suggestion. I have downloaded everything. I did the ALSA package twice just to be sure. There is a long thread at Mepislovers on sound issues alone. The K7 kernel will not boot into x at all. No gui login and startx=blank screen after text login. I'm sticking to the default kernel for the time being.
