Could you also give us your

Could you also give us your system specs, specifically what graphics card your running?
For example, I run an ATI graphics card and when I use the fglrx driver, it sometimes has a similar problem.
But if I use the Radeon (xorg) driver = no problems.
If you are running an ATI graphics card, go to your MEPIS X-Windows Assistant and try using the Radeon (xorg) driver.

the system is a Acer Aspire

A quick search using google

A quick search using google tells me the available driver for your card is the VESA (xorg) driver.
Or you could try these http://sourceforge.net/projects/unichrome/
Hope it helps.

synaptic tells me that I

synaptic tells me that I have the following already installed:-

xserver-org-video-via 1:0.2.1-1mepis1

-----------

but also available to install is:-

xserver-org-video-via 1:1.0.33.2-OUbuntu4

---------

which of these is the better driver & how do I change the driver used?

MEPIS will do it for you.

Go to your MEPIS X-Windows Assistant and try using the VESA (xorg) driver.
You can follow this path Kmenu> System> MEPIS> MEPIS X-Windows Assistant. Select the driver you want and apply the change.

Quick note: you may already be using the vesa driver, if you find that you are, it maybe something you have to deal with until they update that driver.
If you want to try the other driver provided at Source Forge link from the earlier post, you do so at your own risk because I have never tried it on any of my computers. I run ATI and Nvidia graphics cards.
