Mepis is just missing one application

It seems that a high percentage of linux users dual boot or use virtual copies of windows in their linux system. It seems that it would be nice if there was a free open source virtual system included. One of microsoft's vista's include virtualpc already.

Even though virtualbox may not be the best software out there, it's free and open source and the more people who use it, I'm sure it will just keep improving. I would love to see virtualbox part of the mepis distro package.

virtualbox is great for even testing out the new releases. Seems it would help people debug and try out the distro more than running a liveCD.

VB is nice and I use it

VB is nice and I use it however there are three problems with including it on CD:

1. there's probably no room, since the space on CD is rather limited non-essential programs are left to be installed by people thought Synaptic or downloading .deb files from websites

2. VB doesn't work in 64 bit.

3. VB in GPL version (that can be distributed on CD) is limited (e.g., no USB devices)

From my standpoint, I see no reason to include VirtualBox. I want a choice of virtual machine. I personally use Parallels. Taking out something else to make room for a virtual machine i do not want is not a good choice.

I guess maybe it's just a personal opinion. I see number one as a personal opinion, as I'd get rid of a lot of applications to include virtualbox. Hell I'd get rid of most of the games, but that's a personal opinion again. I personally see more reason to have virtualbox over some of the games. Just as it was said you can download the games if you want.

On their website it indicates they are currently working on a 64bit version. They just seem to be the only ones working on a FOSS virtual machine. I honestly think vmware is better to be honest, but I prefer supporting FOSS.

AdrianTM I'm really not sure what you mean by number 3 to be honest. Maybe it's just my ignorance, but I'm not familiar with how GPL has the limitation on no USB devices?

I wasn't aware of Parallels, but looks like it costs money,so not understanding the point in bringing it up? The original subject was about including an application in the main distro, not about what you can download, what you can buy or what you can install.

From VBox page:

If you want the extra features that are missing from VirtualBox OSE, you can alternatively use the full VirtualBox package free of charge for personal use or evaluation purposes.

So there are features that miss in Open Source Edition (I think USB support is one of them).

The point was that the specific app you asked for was a virtual machine. Parallels is another option, and there are others. The fact that it costs money is immaterial, and bringing up another option is very germaine, in my opinion. I do not know why you feel that the subject had to be so narrowly restricted.
