Port on Synaptic Package Manager

I tried to update Mepis while at my school today. The firewall is crazy strict, they even block websites about weather and server OS's. I am trying to see what port Synaptic Package Manager uses to see if I can get it unblocked.

Do you have a question.....?

Hi,

IF your school policies do not allow this, you should not ask us how to circumvent their policies. That is, if you are asking that......Smiling.

Send a polite e-mail to school's IT department. That's something that has to be fixed there.

No computer is magic, no operating system is magic, no website is magic. They all require human interaction, thought, and responsibility to work.

Ok, I am not trying to go

Ok, I am not trying to go around the schools policies. If I were trying to do that I'd load openssh on my server at home. I am simply trying to find what port synaptic update uses so I can go to IT with all the information needed. IT here is small and I want my issue to be addressed, so I want to give all the information I can gather as I am one of two mepis users in the building.

I think it connects using

My Guess

James, my guess is that the IT dept is not blocking a port that is causing your problems, but rather, that they are blocking URLs or IP addresses.

You may want to print out a copy of your /etc/apt/sources.list so that they can see the URLs that are being used.

Then, let them know how they are used and what they are used for. If you think it would help your case, give them some references to this forum, or other useful websites Smiling

Ok, so I took a look into

Ok, so I took a look into that file, and I noticed a majority of then were ubuntu. When I tried going to ubuntu.com It wouldnt load....nor will debian.org load...Anyway, here is an error message I received when trying to download Angband. I had a similiar message when trying to get Planner and some of its dependicies, the only difference being the acutal file name and path.

W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/a/angband/angband_3.0.6-1_i386.deb
Connection failed [IP: 91.189.89.8 80]

I shall update after I talk to IT.

New to me!

oK, so I guess they have some networks set to low priority. Many of then are in Europe and Latin America. The ubuntu sites are in Europe, so I am timing out. Sad
